Addicted to snapping stories of your pooch? Picturesque photo sites are abundant on property; you’ll find plenty of swoon worthy spots to snap sublime shots on the grounds.

Speaking of photo opportunities, one of the most popular, quintessential Paséa experiences is access to top notch surfing instructors from the legendary Clint Carroll Surf School. These seasoned local pros are ready and waiting to coach you how to catch your first waves. This is Surf City USA after all, and there’s no time like the present. I was catching waves after about an hour of struggling to pop up from my knees to my feet. Less adventurous guests can take advantage of relaxing amenities, such as lounging beachfront with complimentary sun chairs, fluffy towels and shade umbrellas, or daily yoga classes on the resort’s ocean facing great lawn.

If the stress of everyday life is taking a toll on your relationship, the hotel’s Aarna Spa is ready to kiss and make it better. Trust me, this is the ideal place to reignite lost passion and rekindle wedded bliss. Devout care has gone into maintaining the character of the spa, holding space for renewal and rebirth at the soul of this hotel. It is pitch perfect in terms of intimacy, grace and service. So snuggle up and get cozy in the Aarna embrace with a couples massage.

Tanner’s restaurant within the hotel was a true highlight of my stay and I can’t recommend it more highly. Contrasting elements of modern and vintage, enjoy farmhouse chic dishes in seaside rustic elegance. Cooking with fire is an ancient art form. Tanner’s is perfecting live fire cookery in order to capture the essence of Southern California cuisine.  For Nate Tanner, Pacific Hospitality Group’s Vice President of Food and Beverage, the inspiration started with a common sight in Huntington Beach: friends gathered around a beach fire enjoying soulful conviviality.

You got that right, Tanner’s does not have a single oven in their kitchen. They use a wood-fired inferno burning cherry and citrus wood to achieve that unmistakable smokey flavor. The grill also serves as the centerpiece of the restaurant’s glass encased kitchen. Executive Chef Igor Krichmar is the master of this wood grill domain, using fire for everything, right down to the shortbread and berries for dessert. Krichmar blends locally grown ingredients capture the sunshine flavors of Southern California.

The wraparound bar is impressive, serving the restaurant from one side while the other side opens up to the pool terrace, creating a cool indoor-outdoor vibe. Specialty cocktails are cleverly conceived, with flavors and fresh ingredients that really pop. Dramatic picture windows overlook both wood oven kitchen on one side and the sunbathers at the pool filled with inflatable unicorns on the other. Social surrealism at its best. There’s yet another treehouse bar and sprawling lounge upstairs above the restaurant, with even more plum sunset views, and a much younger scene.

The whole place smells divine, like a beach barbecue, thanks to the venue’s signature rustic wood-fired grill. Basics like tacos are on point, made with yet more steakhouse meat. The standout for me is the mussels with wood grilled chorizo, curry broth, charred tomatoes, Israeli couscous, and garlic bread. The dish is served in an impressively deep cauldron, the bottom of the pot is lined with curry-laced Israeli couscous – totally fluffy and sublime. Mussels are plump and beautiful and very flavorful.

While dogs are not allowed in the restaurants, Aarna Spa, or the pool areas, there is a patio area at the restaurant should you wish to dine with your dog. Now that’s what I call civilized.
