He hasn’t taken a vacation in over 8 years

My grandma or “abuelita” as I call her is one of the wisest people I know. I enjoy talking with her. I could listen to her for hours and hours. One of the many things she taught me was that each one of us has a purpose in life, something that makes you very happy.
I can proudly say my “abuelita”’s purpose in life was helping others. I say “was” because she now has Alzheimer’s, but before she got sick she enjoyed offering a hand to those who needed it. Abuelita always thought of others first before thinking of herself.
Zhou Yusoung’s purpose in life is as beautiful as the one my Grandma had. Zhou lives in Zhenzhou, China and his mission in life is helping human’s best friends: dogs. What he has done for these dogs is priceless and will definitely touch your heart.
Meet Zhou, China’s “Guardian of Dogs”…
Zhou’s beautiful story started one day eight years ago when he found a stray dog that was hit by a car. In China, stray dogs are seen everywhere. According to the Shanghai Daily, one of the reasons for the overpopulation of stray dogs, is the increase in the number of people abandoning their dogs as well as not neutering strays. Thankfully, there are people like Zhou who have come to the rescue.
Zhou realized the dog needed a lot of help and sadly was ignored by the people who were passing by on the road. He decided to pick him up and take him to the nearest shelter as he didn’t want the dog to continue suffering. He couldn’t take him to his apartment because it was that small that he didn’t have space for a dog.
Once he got to the shelter, he was surprised to find out that it was overpopulated with stray dogs. He decided it was time to help and started donating 200 yuan ($30 USD) to the shelter each month to help with dogs’ food and treatments. It may not seem like much, but when the minimum salary in China is less than $300 month, what matters is Zhou’s intention and action to help.
Zhou wanted to do more. He wasn’t going to stop. His goal was obtaining more money to help stray dogs have a better quality of life. He approached a friend to invest 800,000 yuan ($122,000 USD) in a new animal shelter. His friend agreed and asked Zhou to be in charge of the shelter, which he happily accepted. Shortly after, China’s “guardian of dogs” quit his job to manage the rescue center full-time.
To date, Zhou has rescued over 700 stray dogs as well as small and medium sized animals. He spends all of his time ensuring the dogs are well taken care of. In eight years, he hasn’t taken a vacation. Besides managing the rescue center, he also does maintenance work, cleans up the kennels and administers medical treatments.
Thanks to his love and dedication, hundreds of dogs at his rescue center have the care they need and are not in danger of living in the streets.
