Canopy Paws: A New Lifestyle Hotel Designed with Your Dog In Mind

Canopy by Hilton’s Paws in the Neighborhood Concept Gets Two Paws Up

By Si Si Penaloza

How many times have you run out while on vacation to pick up something for your dog— whether it’s a necessity for your Neapolitan Mastiff or a feel good treat for your neurotic Norfolk Terrier? We get it, it feels pretty basic. What if there was a hotel brand that catered to our overzealous catering to our pup? Canopy by Hilton, Hilton’s latest lifestyle hotel brand, recently launched Paws in the Neighborhood and we couldn’t be more intrigued. The program is aimed at ensuring guests of all leg configurations have a just-right, local experience before they even strut through the door. It’s about taking care of all the little things that pop up when traveling with pets so that we don’t have to.

Innovation around the particular pet needs of travelers has become increasingly important in hospitality. As hotels compete to stay relevant, we say pet culture must be on their radar. Canopy by Hilton crafts an experience rooted in the local vibe, and no exceptions are made for guests traveling leash-in-hand. As part of the Paws in the Neighborhood program, each guest will receive a dog’s guide to the neighborhood, a handy directory to nearby dog-centric spaces and services including parks, beaches and trails, groomers and vets, dog treat bakeries and dog-friendly eateries – any place where local dogs and their people gather.

Canopy by Hilton is a relatively new member of the Hilton portfolio; its first hotel, Canopy Reykjavik City Centre, opened in Iceland in July 2016. The first U.S. Canopy property opened in October 2017 in Washington, D.C. To keep up with the fast growing audience of travelers with pets, Paws in the Neighborhood will be available in all current and future Canopy by Hilton properties in North America.

In partnership with Planet Dog events, Canopy by Hilton properties will host a regular line up of on-site gatherings for guests, locals and their dogs. Naturally, the pup-centric programming will vary depending on location, but dog lovers can anticipate Yappy Hours, Halloween Pet Costume Contests, and other similar events at their local Canopy. The partnership debuts at Canopy Washington D.C. The Wharf, the brand’s first property in the Americas. Hilton has announced plans for 16 more to open over the next two years, at locations in Rockville, Maryland; Portland, Oregon; Dallas; Ithaca, New York; London; Minneapolis; Oklahoma City; Atlanta; Toronto; San Antonio; West Palm Beach; Charlotte; Baltimore; Columbus, Ohio; and Hangzhou, China.

After a breezy check-in, guests and their four-legged friends settle into their Just-Right Room, complete with a Just-Right dog bed, a Canopy placemat, “Woof!” door hanger tag and Planet Dog food and water bowls. In a nod to the environment and healthy hydration, you’ll find a filtered spring water station on every floor of the hotel. Peeps and pups can refresh throughout their stay with ease. Bring forth your reusable water bottles and bowls!

Sweet little perks are a core part of the Canopy check-in experience. Guests will receive a welcome gift upon check-in inspired by the destination. In Toronto, we think it should be a Rosen’s Cinnamon Bun; or better yet, a jar of their decadent new Rosen’s Cinnamon Bun Toast Spread! An instant cult favorite with in-the-know Toronto food hounds. A good candidate for the future Atlanta outpost is the A-Town Cream, Sublime Doughnuts’ answer to a Boston Cream Pie. One hundred percent worth the sugar splurge. In Denver, fingers crossed for the beloved treats from Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory.

Just as human guests nab a gift from the neighborhood upon arrival, their canine counterparts receive their own Paws in the Neighborhood welcome which includes: a Paws in the Neighborhood Cinch Pack, a Planet Dog Orbee ball, dubbed the “world’s best and most durable dog ball” by pet experts, house-made or locally-sourced dog treats and a dispenser of pickup bags. Fleece-lined collars and leashes from Planet Dog’s best-selling hemp line will be available on loan from the welcome desk.

Each Canopy dog’s guide to the neighborhood is written by local Canopy Enthusiasts with recommendations from Planet Dog for a true insider’s perspective on the canine scene. To bring the experience home, Canopy guests gain access to a promo code for 20 percent savings each and every time they shop with Planet Dog. Talk about the hotel perk that keeps on giving! A veteran in the pet space since 1997, Planet Dog is known for its Orbee Tuff toys, proudly made in the U.S. A leader in eco-friendly, durable design, the company is consistently developing premium products “made for dogs, by dog lovers.” Such in-room offerings allow us to share energizing, comfortable stays with our fur babies.

Canopy puts an emphasis on casual comfort, so taking the stress out of traveling with your pet is a natural extension of their ethos. For a non-refundable cleaning fee that the company says will not exceed $50, guests can bring up to two dogs for their stay. Dogs weighing more than 75 pounds will be permitted only at the property’s discretion.
