Clafouti brings a touch of France to Toronto’s hipster epicenter

Trinity Bellwoods park is in the heart Toronto’s hippest neighborhood. Filled with mature trees and winding pathways, it is a destination for urbanites seeking green solace from the concrete frenzy of the city. Over the years, the neighborhood has literally wrapped itself around the emerald enclave, with charming shops and cafes lining both its north and south borders. On the south side, along the trendy West Queen West strip sits Clafouti – a petit taste of French culture in the middle of Canada’s largest city.
Traditionally Clafouti, (or Clafoutis) refers to a baked dessert of fruit, most commonly black cherries, arranged in a buttered dish and covered with a thick flan-like batter. In other words, patrons can expect old-world-baked-yummy-goodness with a splash of Francais-style! Clafouti’s French-born owner, Olivier Jansen-Reynaud prides himself on running an innovative French bakery that embraces the laid back attitude of the neighborhood. Over its 10-year history, Clafouti has become famous for its croissants, its Crookie™ (a half-Oreo and half-croissant delicacy that has won the small bakery international acclaim) as well as the roster of celebrity visitors it attracts. But we at Get Leashed love Clafouti for yet another reason.
In Toronto, where dining with your dog is a near impossibility, Clafouti offers a refreshing, dog-friendly alternative to the status-quo. Reminiscent of a Parisian café, Clafouti boasts two bistro tables on the sidewalk in front of the bakery where dog owners and their four-legged friends can stop for a scrumptious lunch, a coffee break, or a light dinner. If the tables are full, simply grab a ‘doggy-bag’ (get it? Doggy bag!) and pop across into the park for a picnic lunch with your pooch.
Other dog-friendly perks of visiting Clafouti include complimentary doggy biscuits located conveniently outside the front door and cool bowls of fresh water delivered upon request from the cheerful kitchen staff.
