The women of New York’s lower east side
By Danielle Goreski
The lower east side, also known as LES, is a neighborhood in the southeastern part of Manhattan. Bounded by Allen Street, East Houston Street, Essex Street, Canal Street, Eldridge Street, East Broadway, and Grand Street, it is definitely one of the trendiest neighbourhoods in New York. Once the home of hardcore punks and poets, the LES has evolved into a mini retail mecca for everything edgy and cool.
The modern LES woman boasts a funky street-style that feels miles away from the coiffed updos and designer handbags (with toy Malteses hidden within) of the upper east side. With her messy shag cut and asymmetric side-swept bangs, the LES is home to the urban hipster-ess, who embodies an effortlessly cool bohemian look. When she’s not working in graphic design or attending an avant-garde gallery opening, the LES dog-lover can be found sipping a cocktail at a favorite pet-friendly spot, or lazing in her eclectically-styled apartment.
