Protecting animals and rocking the entertainment scene
By the Get Leashed Doggy Style team
The great thing about being immersed in the animal world is that you get hooked up with other super cool people working in the same biz. We were thrilled to meet Josey, because, well, who knew an organization like World Animal Protection would have such a hip Executive Director? If you haven’t looked in on what they’re up to, you should check out their site – you’ll get the feeling Josey resembles their intentions perfectly: caring, unassuming, totally dedicated to the cause, but with a bit of an edge. All of this is to say, WAP is doing some good stuff!
As pet lovers attract each other, it’s not surprising that a woman like Josey fell for a chill, dog-having guy like Jeff. Having since moved in together, the result is a lot of happy paws in one place. But they make it work and it’s easy to tell that another one or two pups wouldn’t really phase them – there’s a lot of love to go around!
Josey & Jeff give the rundown on their super hip life style and adventures in doggie rescuing in their own words below…
Tell us about yourself:
Josey: I’m the Executive Director of World Animal Protection, an international animal protection organization that operates in over 50 countries. I oversee all of the work in the Canadian office, including our programs, fundraising and communications campaigns. I’m very passionate about animals and I’m inspired everyday by our supporters who move the world to protect animals. It’s a fantastic job and I feel very lucky to have it.
Jeff: I’m a Locations Production Assistant. I work on location for movies and TV shows in and around the GTA, including for high profile productions like The Strain and Hannibal. It’s a pretty hectic job with long hours but I get to see some really cool stuff and I know what’s going to happen next season before it airs. I’m also lead guitarist for The Bright Skies, a Toronto based indie band.
What’s your ideal weekend?
Jeff: We love spending time with the dogs. You can usually find us in Sherwood Park or at the Brickworks grabbing a snack with the dogs at Café Belong. Our favorite local restaurants are Smoked and Cracked and Wild Burger, so we usually end up at one of those places for dinner.
Josey: I love yoga and lifting weights and Jeff is a road biker so we’re always on the go in the gym or yoga studio or on the road or training (depending on the weather).
Tell us about your pets:
Josey: Oscar is a Chihuahua/Yorkie and is a rescue from Save Me Rescue. He’s the doggie love of my life. He saved me from a lot of heartache after I lost 3 dogs in 3 years. He’s a total mamma’s boy.
Jeff: Bronwyn is Boxer-American Bulldog cross and is a rescue from the Toronto Humane Society. She was found abandoned in a park tied to a tree severely emaciated. I was volunteering at THS and Bronwyn is my failed foster. She is definitely my dog. She loves Josey but she gets depressed when I’m working long hours. We’ve been through a lot together.
Bolt is a Chihuahua and is our latest foster dog, also from Save Me Rescue. He’s the sweetest, best behaved and most loving foster we’ve ever had. He loves toys, likes all dogs and people and loves to sleep under the covers. He’s fully crate- trained and house-trained. He’d be the perfect addition to any family. It’s going to be very hard for us to say bye to him.
How would you describe your personal style?
Josey: I love fashion and I love Toronto street style. I’m always amazed at the creativity of our trendiest communities. I like to get creative with my own clothes and accessories and mix different styles. I’d say classic with an edge. I spend a lot of time in vintage and designer consignment stores.
Jeff: I tend to wear whatever I think looks good regardless of the style. When I’m on set it’s really basic – jeans and t-shirts or really, really warm clothes as locations staff work outside a lot. When we go out I tend to dress up – bowties, vests, jackets. It all depends on how I’m feeling and where we’re going.
What inspires you?
Josey: My work inspires me. Through World Animal Protection I’m able to help the world see how important animals are to all of us and inspire people to change animals’ lives for the better. At the end of the day I get to protect animals for a living – that’s pretty fantastic.
Jeff: Our dogs inspire me. They’ve all been through so much and they take it all in stride. They’re always happy and grateful for what they have. It was love of dogs that sparked that initial attraction between us. So we owe them a lot.
How would you describe the look and feel of your home?
Josey: I’m a bit obsessed with vintage right now. We have a small space so I’ve tried to bring that out in subtle ways. Too much clutter drives me crazy. So I really take my time before I choose a piece making sure it will fit. But really it’s Jeff and the dogs that make it feel like home for me.
Jeff: I came with quite a lot of guitars and they’ve been a welcome addition to the decor. Somehow they just fit with the whole look and feel of our condo.
Share an anecdote about your relationship with your pet.
Josey: About a month ago we tried giving Oscar blueberries for the first time. I just put them in his bowl with his food. About 20 minutes later we found him playing with them on the floor. Rolling them around and pouncing on them. The video we captured is hilarious. Oscar is always forcing me to stop whatever I’m doing and just laugh. He puts me in a good mood every day.
Jeff: Bronwyn is only supposed to sleep on the end of the bed. We have a Queen, so space is at a premium. She’s always desperate to lie right beside me so if Josey moves ever so slightly, she army crawls into the “free space.” She’ll perform this maneuver several times throughout the night until she’s right in between us. I really miss her when I’m working on a show that keeps me out of the house a lot.
