Milo Clothing

Smart looking pet accessories for fancy pups

By Jon Nelson

There are a lot of options for amping up your dog’s wardrobe, but nothing induces the oohs and the aahs at the dog park like a smart-looking, dressed up dog. These dapper pooches can do no wrong and maybe we’re crazy, but a dog in a bow tie just seems more sophisticated, even if he’s eating garbage and sniffing butts while wearing it.

It’s hard not to fall in love with, well, Milo first off, but, more to the point, the clothing line he models and lends his name to. This adorable Maltese is one of the most well-dressed dogs out there and has successfully caught the eye and won the hearts of legions of in-love followers on his Instagram page, Milo Meets World and YouTube channel of the same name.

We caught up with Milo’s owner and the founder of Milo Clothing, Anita Cheng, to get a better sense of how this line of products that successfully turns a dog into a proper gentleman or fancy lady, came to be.

With an eye for style, you could have designed anything. Why pet products?Screen Shot 2015-02-24 at 9.03.45 PM

A few years ago we started making videos featuring our dog Milo and putting them on YouTube.  We did it just for fun and would spend time shopping for outfits, accessories and decorations for each video.  Milo is a pretty small guy and it was sometimes hard to find clothing that fit him and when we did it wasn’t always well made.  I began making things myself and was having such fun doing it that I decided to start Milo Clothing. The line began with wool jackets and last year I added a collection of Bow Ties that have been very popular.  All pets deserve to look a little fancy once in a while!

What inspires your designs?

I have always loved men’s fashion, especially men’s suiting.  I imagine that Milo would be a very dapper gentleman so I design pieces based on what I think he would wear.  One of the most challenging but rewarding parts of the process is sourcing fabrics. There are so many different options out there and it can be overwhelming but when I come across a fabric that I love, the ideas flow and I can’t wait to start a new piece for the collection.  Each piece is handmade in Toronto and the materials used to make them are sourced from local shops.

Tell us more about Milo!

Milo is a 3 year old Maltese. He’s just a little guy, about 3 1/2 pounds.  He was born small and stayed small and we really forget about his size until we see him next to other dogs.  He has such a sweet personality, loves to cuddle but is also very independent.  He loves long walks and people watching.  Milo’s a smart guy so we do our best to keep his mind active with dog puzzles or teaching him new tricks. We receive so many loving messages (on Milo’s social channels) from people around the world saying how much seeing Milo makes them smile or gets them through a rough day.  It’s a wonderful thing to be able to connect with other dog lovers from all over.
