The founder of Fuel Training Club & Ben the Portuguese Water Dog
By the Get Leashed Doggy Style team
It’s a widely-known fact that dogs make great mascots. Their friendly, excitable energy and abundant facial expressions bring joy to everyone around and in turn, motivation when it’s needed most. Like a Dalmatian to a fire house, Greg Hetherington has integrated a Portuguese Water Dog into his fitness club and make no mistake, Ben gets the people going! As a veteran Canadian Football League player, Greg is no stranger to long, hard workouts. But as anyone who’s ever tried to lose weight and gain strength knows, working out can be super boring. Fuel Training Club changes that. Group workouts are fun and results oriented while designed to be effective and efficient to keep the body improving. It’s a new kind of fitness training that everyone should try. Plus, you get to visit with Ben – chosen for his breed’s non-shedding, hypoallergenic attributes – perfect for a dog who loves to cozy up to exhausted, post-workout patrons while they stretch.
Here’s Greg to tell you more about himself, Ben, & Fuel Training Club:
Tell us about yourself and your job:
The best part about [running FUEL Training Club] is that it doesn’t feel like a job. I’m doing what I love to do. Plus, I get to bring my dog with me to work.
A bit about your pet:
Ben is a Portuguese Water Dog. I’ve always wanted a dog that I could bring with me anywhere. Obviously there are some limitations to where a dog can go, but to minimize those limitations we needed three things: a) a dog that doesn’t shed, b) a medium-sized dog, and c) an active dog.
He comes with me just about everywhere.
What does your ideal weekend look like?
My wife (Kelly) and I usually take Ben to Cherry Beach, High Park or Corktown Commons for a long walk and a coffee. He’ll join us for outdoor workouts. His favorite workout is doing stair sprints at High Park. He’ll push me to run faster because he likes to stay just a step ahead the whole time and it’s easy for him.
Describe your personal style:
What inspires you?
Seeing people accomplish goals that they set for themselves. Especially when you see them go through the adversity to get there.
How would you describe the look and feel of your workplace?
Well it’s a gym, but it’s wide open and perfect to play fetch in on rainy days.
A story about your pet:
I think my story is actually every one of our members’ stories. Ben will become friends with anyone. If you lie down to stretch or recover from a workout, Ben will come and lie on or next to you. He’s really become “everyone’s dog.” If you look at him when he has a toy, he’ll run up to you to play with him. If he wants your attention, he’ll growl until you give it to him. If you give him a treat, he’ll be your best friend.
