Carolynn & Sarah

Celebrating Pride with a couple dedicated to the wonderful organization & annual festival

By the Get Leashed Doggy Style team

While there are Pride events happening across the globe all summer long, Toronto Pride is one of the biggest festivals on the LGBTQ calendar. That’s why we were stoked to get to hang out with Carolynn and Sarah, both of whom are super-involved in organizing and executing this weekend’s festivities. Needless to say, these two are exhausted, but you wouldn’t be able to tell, because they’re also brimming with excitement and almost tangible joy.

We recently wrote that dogs are the best proof that being gay is awesome. Admittedly, it’s a bit of a silly feature, but in it there is a kernel of truth: dogs are happy when they’re surrounded by love. Case in point: Ginger and Winny. Carolynn and Sarah’s family is complemented by two of the sweetest pups we’ve met to date and it’s so clear that this whole crew was meant to be.

We could go on about the admiration we have for this couple and the dedication they have to their community. And we could gush for another page about how well these two suit each other and how being in their apartment makes you want to call everyone you love and invite them to catch up. But like we said, it’s a busy weekend! So take a minute to get to know this fabulous couple, then get out there and enjoy Pride!

Please tell us a little bit about yourself:

Carolynn: I’m a Pediatric RN at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehab. I work with clients and families during some of their most trying times and I try to keep that in mind while providing a healthy dose of humor and fun every day.
(Editor’s note: She also sits on the board of directors for Pride Toronto!).

Sarah: I’m a Volunteer and Community Engagement Specialist at The 519 – a City of Toronto Agency that services the LGBTQ community. I am regularly in awe of the generosity and commitment of volunteers – they truly are the best part of my job. And I write, I paint, I take photos; these things, I love.

A bit about your pets:

Winny is a Maltipoo and is 13 years old. She was a gift from Carolynn’s Grandmother. Ginger is a Shihtzu and is 10 years old. She was recently adopted from the Toronto Humane Society in January of 2015. We were looking to expand our family with a senior pup, so when Ginger showed up on their website we knew she was the perfect fit. Both dogs are very laid-back. Ginger loves people, particularly children, while Winny prefers other four-legged friends.

What does your ideal weekend look like?

Our best weekends are freeform – no plans! It could include taking the pups to the lake, spending time together, hanging with friends and partaking in the odd night of dancing and debauchery.

Describe your style in a couple words or a phrase:IMG_7097

Carolynn: dweeb chic

Sarah:  casual eclectic

What inspires you?

Sarah: people that go against the grain.

Carolynn: the children that I work with who push the limits of possibility against all odds.

How would you describe the look and feel of your home (or shoot location)?

Contemporary country

A story about your pets:

Carolynn: It was the first time that I was leaving Ginger outside the local coffee shop while I ran to get a cuppa joe. I clipped her leash to their doggie-post, and went into the store. When I came out three minutes later, coffee in hand, I found her completely surrounded by a whole gaggle of children upside down on her back having her belly rubbed. Up until that point she hadn’t really shown any interest in people or children. From that moment on she really began to open up to us and show her beautiful personality.

Sarah: For me, it was when I was having a word with Winny regarding her liver treat fixation – she looked at me with a mischievous little grin, stuck her tongue out and gave one, just one, sassy lick of my wagging finger.
