Meet the Global TV Senior Anchor, her family & their dog Jagger!
By the Get Leashed Doggy Style team
We hear time and time again that a dog is the centerpiece of a family. It’s true that while everyone has a defined relationship to a family member – husband, wife, brother etc., a dog is “the dog” to everyone and as such can play a different role at different times to each person in the household. Sometimes a dog is our playmate, our source of comfort, our confidant or just our buddy to hang out with when everyone else is busy. A true testament of a tightknit family is their mutual love for the family dog.
With her family’s busy schedule, it would be totally understandable if Jamie Orchard didn’t have a dog in her home. At Get Leashed, one of our favorite signs of a true pet-person is when they speak about their schedule and mention a daily dog walk as the highlight. For people like Jamie and her family, having a dog brings too much joy to ever consider as a possible inconvenience – our kind of people!
Learn a bit more about Jamie’s incredibly interesting life and how her family fits a wonderfully rambunctious and sweet pup into it…
Please tell us about yourself:
I am the Senior Anchor at Global Television in Montreal, which means I anchor the news at noon, the 1-hour nightly newscast at 5:30 pm, and a weekly talk show called “Focus Montreal.” My absolute favorite part of the job is meeting exceptional people, getting to know them and telling their stories. Over the course of my career I have interviewed Premiers, Prime Ministers, actors, and spiritual leaders like the Dalai Lama, but the people who inspire me most are the Montrealers I meet who are making a real difference in their community and who are often not celebrated enough for their efforts.
My work day is intense, fast-paced and filled with adrenaline, so at home we try to keep things more low-key, mellow, and fun. My day starts around 6:30 am and the first hour is focused on getting the kids out the door; but in the interest of keeping it mellow, we don’t stress about it. We skip the school bus and I drive them so they can arrive just before the bell at 8:00 am. After that it’s Jagger time. He takes me for a morning walk every day and it contributes greatly to my overall sanity.
I’m usually at work by 9:30 am, and the day is pretty much a frenzy of reading, writing, interviewing, and anchoring until 6:30 pm.
A bit about your pet:
Jagger is an 18-month-old American Golden Retriever, which is essentially a Golden Retriever with a redder coat. We opted for this breed because Goldens are known for being sociable, great with kids, affectionate and smart. We had a blond Golden who we absolutely adored for 12 years, so while we were committed to getting another Golden Retriever, we wanted to be sure our new dog did not look too much like our beloved Max. We wanted him to be able to make his own place in our family, so we opted for a red golden. From the moment we brought Jagger home, he made his own place! He was just 9 weeks old when he first started living with us and he was a handful! The redder Goldens can have more of the tendencies of Irish setters, so from day one, Jagger was a jumper, a chewer, and a rambunctious scamp who challenged us every day — but we wouldn’t change him for the world.
What does your ideal weekend look like?
Our ideal weekend is spent at home as much as possible. We like to cocoon with the kids, watch movies and cuddle on the couch. In reality, we are often also fitting in soccer games, tennis tournaments and swim lessons, but ideally we spend as much quiet family time together as we can.
Describe your personal style:
Modern but warm. I like the clean lines of contemporary decor, but I want my house to have a warm, welcoming feel, so I mix in some traditional touches often influenced by French Provence style.
What inspires you?
Joy and faith. We live in such a crazy world that I think you have to have faith in something. For me, I put my faith in my family, our connection to each other and our unconditional love.
How would you describe the look and feel of your home?
Right now it’s really clean! We just finished renovating so it’s as neat as it has ever been, which makes us all feel lighter. I think the look we’re going for is warm, but uncluttered and fresh.
A story about your Jagger:
Jagger is still a puppy, so he is full of life, incredibly active and craves constant affection and attention. Whenever anybody comes into the house he gets so excited he genuinely cannot contain himself. He jumps all over people and simply will not stop until they pause and pet him. We’re trying to train this out of him, and I keep a constant hand on his collar whenever someone comes into the house. A few months ago, our good friend was coming over to watch the hockey game, and as he walked in I grabbed Jagger’s collar, but he pulled so hard he pulled me to my knees and then he flipped onto his back. The two of us were lying in a pile on the floor when our friend walked in. I burst out laughing, and Jagger escape my grip to jump all over our friend to get his hug. I think that sums up our relationship right now pretty well; I’m a pushover and he does pretty much whatever he wants, and still gets lots of loving in the end.
