Meet the owners of Parkdale’s In Vintage We Trust & O’Shea the Frenchie
By the Get Leashed Doggy Style team
The vintage game is strong in Toronto. Enter Parkdale’s In Vintage We Trust and you’ll step back to the heyday of designer clothing made new again by today’s young people. Of course, where the vibe is hip and the culture cool, there’s a dog on the scene.
Josh and Chantal, the couple behind In Vintage We Trust, have a rambunctious French Bulldog with a dynamite personality. We won’t spoil where O’Shea got his awesome name, but we’ll tell you that he makes the perfect shop dog. He’s a people lover, interested in everyone who comes into the store while dedicated to greeting people outside as well, making him an escape artist and ensuring he’s kept on a lead by the shop’s counter. He’s the perfect dog to give In Vintage We Trust a welcome atmosphere to greet the increasingly fresh culture of young shoppers in the neighborhood.
If you’re looking for a perfect piece for your wardrobe or a gift for a stylish man in your life, visit In Vintage We Trust and be sure to get a special, vibrant greeting from O’Shea!
Please tell us about yourselves:
We run a vintage clothing shop called In Vintage We Trust, right in the heart of Parkdale. We specialize in men’s clothing, footwear, and accessories spanning the last century — everything from workwear, to sportswear, military garb to pop culture can be found within our store. As is the case with most people in the business of collectibles, the best part of our job is sourcing and unearthing goods and relics lost to the hands of time. Most days start off at the crack of dawn, getting O’Shea, our Frenchie, ready and fed before we’re off to the shop where we map out the rest of our day.
A bit about your pet:
Our dog’s name is O’Shea. Although he shares the same government name as Ice Cube, we named him after a sporting goods brand out of Chicago called O’Shea Knitting Mills. We decided on a French Bulldog because they’re great with people, can live the condo life, and have loads of personality. We found a great breeder and got on their waiting list. We waited just over a year as we wanted a male and were always second in line for one. He was the only puppy in the litter and we got the call a few days later that he was ours.
O’Shea may be compact in size, but he is a firecracker! He is athletic, energetic, and a great example of the breed. He comes with a lot of personality and is quite expressive. I don’t think we’ve ever met a dog that can perfectly express how he’s feeling with one little snort, grunt, sigh, burp, sneeze, etc. He has a different sound for every mood. Unfortunately that also means he has a sound for sleeping, so the snoring took some time to get used to.
What does your ideal weekend look like?
Our weekends are now spent at the shop with O’Shea. He’s been coming to work with us since we brought him home, so he’s accustomed to our busy lifestyle. Our weekend routine doesn’t differ much from our weekday. We’re early risers so O’Shea gets a brisk walk before breakfast, then some TV lounging before we head off to the shop. O’Shea’s day is filled with play sessions, naps, and walks around Parkdale while we’re busy answering emails, re-stocking the merchandise, and interacting with customers.
Describe your personal style:
Chantal: I have a work “uniform” that consists of jeans, vintage tees, and chucks.
Josh: I try and mix equal parts Fabolous and Mike-D into every outfit…
What inspires you?
We make sure that all business and personal decisions are done on our own terms. Sometimes it takes longer, but it’s always a more satisfying venture. We can wholeheartedly say that we wake up loving what we do on a day-to-day basis.
How would you describe the look and feel of your shop?
Our retail store was a major renovation that took a lot of time, but we were able to customize the space to fit our needs. Our personal style is evident within the space and all of the decor pieces are items we would want displayed in our home.
A story about O’Shea:
We drove to the Niagara Falls region to pick up O’Shea from our breeder when he was 8 weeks old. Unfortunately there was a surprise snowstorm that doubled our travelling time and caused us major stress. It was O’Shea’s first snow fall and long car ride so we weren’t sure how he was going to react. Not even bothered by the snow, O’Shea was happy to see us again and plopped himself into his car seat and slept soundly the entire drive home. We knew from that point that he had a “go with the flow” personality, which makes him the perfect fit for us. O’Shea is a constant reminder that you just gotta roll with whatever’s thrown at you.
