Get to know the owner of Snow Drift Media & His Rambunctious Lab-Rottweiller
By the Get Leashed Doggy Style team
Rob Massie flies drones. Just a few years ago, that would have been an absurd sentence to write and would lead one to believe Massie worked for the army, a space program, or something very out of the ordinary. But truth be told, he’s freelance and works on a variety of commercial projects. Flying a remote camera, while still unique and pretty specialized, is becoming more popular every day. But since Massie was an early adopter, his skill set is well above average hobbyists and it shows in his work. Just take a look at the Snow Drift Media website to prove it.
We caught up with Rob Massie and his gorgeous pup, Khyber at his downtown Toronto condo to chat dogs, drones and living in the city. Because Massie gets to make his own hours, Khyber gets the high level of exercise her active breed needs, which means lots of trips to the park and out of the city when Massie’s schedule permits it. Being a high-octane dog owner in the city can have its challenges, but Massie is a high-octane human who matches Khyber’s levels of energy and excitement so the two are a perfect match.
We’ll leave it to Massie to tell you more about life with Khyber and his super cool job…
Please tell us about yourself:
I’m a freelance filmmaker based out of Toronto. I film, edit and occasionally direct corporate videos, event coverage, web content and HD TV.
I often use a UAV/Drone to get the shots I need. I have been flying drones commercially for just under 2 years; I’m insured and have a permit from Transport Canada to fly in Ontario and British Columbia. A little more than half my clientele and jobs in 2015 were drone-related. I was extremely fortunate that I was able to travel to the West Coast numerous times for my work.
A bit about your pet:
Khyber is a 1.5 year-old Lab/Rotti mix. She is named after an out-of-bounds region on Whistler Mountain that I loved to snowboard in when I lived there after University.
I have several friends that have Lab/Rotti mixes and over the years of playing with them I came to love the mix and their temperament. Khyber is smart and occasionally defiant, but really only when I’m taking too long to get out to the park.
What does your ideal weekend look like?
My ideal weekend is getting out with all the friends and their dogs, maybe to a cottage or somewhere with some property where everyone can run around. If we can’t get out of the city there are tons of park options close by where we meet up for a coffee while the dogs burn off some energy.
Describe your personal style:
Casual and laid back. Function over fashion.
What inspires you?
My friends. As I get older and I look around at where my friends have traveled and what they have accomplished I am constantly inspired to push myself.
How would you describe the look and feel of your home?
Clean, simple and bright. Unless you are looking at the office…
A story about Khyber:
Khyber came from a litter of 10 puppies and for some reason I ended up having her at 7 weeks rather than 8. I spent the first week sleeping with my head in her crate on the floor because she wouldn’t stop crying and I was afraid my neighbors were going to kill me. I guess I can’t blame her; one night she has 9 friends to cuddle and stay warm with and then she is taken away and put in a crate by herself. It was definitely a bonding experience.
