Get to know the co-owner of Our Noble Companions & Earl the Great Dane
By the Get Leashed Doggy Style team
We’re falling in love with Great Danes here at Get Leashed Magazine. Not just because every time we post their pictures, our traffic spikes like crazy, but because they’re easily the most chilled-out dogs around, which usually means their owners are pretty cool too. Earl (dog) and Katie (human) were no exception. Earl was ready and willing to have his photos taken and become instant friends with our Doggy Style team – hamming it up with his wonderful, big dog features.
Katie co-owns Our Noble Companions, a day care for dogs in Toronto that has quickly gained a trustworthy reputation amongst local dog owners. We meet a lot of people that love dogs, but there’s something special about those that choose to work with them everyday.
Read on to find out how Katie incorporates Earl into her life and what inspired her to give up the grind to build her dream job at Our Noble Companions.
Please tell us about yourself:
I am Co-Owner of Our Noble Companions. My business partner, Murielle, and I started our dog walking business 2 years ago. This past July we opened our brick and mortar daycare space at Dundas West and Palmerston and have had such a warm welcome to the neighborhood. It’s been a really organic growth for us and we are so lucky to have the most amazing group of women working on our team. It took me a while into my adult life to realize that I could make working with dogs my career, but when I did it was a life changer.
A bit about your pets:
We have three boys. Earl is our dog and Warren and Henry are our cats. Earl is a Great Dane. I always wanted a Great Dane and knew that’s what I would get as soon as I was at a point in my life where I could responsibly bring a dog into my home. They truly are gentle giants, and despite their size they make the perfect city companion. I am actually quite similar to Earl; totally content to stay on the sofa all day, but once you get me out the door I’m down for a good time.
What does your ideal weekend look like?
My husband travels quite a lot for work so, first off, my ideal weekend begins with him being at home. We would wake up and walk Earl over to our local coffee shop, Capital Espresso. Earl gets a croissant on the weekends. Follow that up with a romp in High Park, dinner at home and then a scary movie on the couch with Chris and our three boys.
Describe your personal style:
Casual, classic, comfortable.
What inspires you?
I try to surround myself with people who push me to be the best version of myself, even if I don’t want to hear what they have to say at the time.
How would you describe the look and feel of your home?
Warm, cozy and inviting. Three animals and blankets everywhere. It’s hard to go out sometimes. My favorite piece is the built-in record shelves that were custom made for us by our friend, Brennan Finlay.
A story about Earl:
A few years ago I knew I needed a career change but had no idea what it was going to be. One day it dawned on me that the best part of every day for me was when I was on a hike or at the dog park with Earl. If I was feeling stressed it would force me to take the focus off of myself. Watching his interactions with nature and other dogs always brings me so much happiness. And now I get to do that with so many amazing dogs, including Earl, every day at work!
