singer / sound healer / yogi – Alexandria & her Cayman Islands rescue, Soul
By Leslie Phelan
When you walk into Alexandria’s home, you are immediately drawn in by the chill, boho vibe of her mid-town sanctuary. Everywhere there are pops of vibrant jewel tones and accents that read like hints at a life lived colorfully and with a love for animals.
This is a house where the pets outnumber the humans and the critters live quite comfortably, even boasting a room that is basically a devoted kitty & pup play space, filled with scratch pads and climb towers and lots of room for family time. The family, in this case, consists of the singer, her partner, Jesse, Soul the island boy, and their two cats, Django and Simba.
The enterprise of “living one’s purpose” takes on different meaning depending on who you are, but if you’re Alexandria, it means staying steadily committed to spreading love through yoga, mindfulness, and song. The born performer, who looks as comfortable in full gypsy glamour garb as she does in flannel and jeans, took an afternoon off from writing and recording songs, teaching yoga, and planning her next wellness event to show Get Leashed around her and Soul’s favorite places: their Church Street haunts and a walk route through the Rosedale Ravine.
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF:
I am a singer who writes music to empower people and bring attention to issues that affect us all today! I am also a yoga teacher and a sound healer. I have created a community wellness event called NULOVE that brings yoga, live music, meditation, a dance party, vegan treats, art, and tribal body painting together with the intention of expanding as a collective and raising our vibration to the highest frequency, the frequency of LOVE! I try to throw about one a month here in Toronto and we always have an amazing time. On top of all that I work full time in marketing and media and am an animal activist. A typical work day for me is a blend of working from home, walking my beautiful dog, and playing with my cats and is usually packed with meetings, lessons, events, and projects, too.
TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR DOG:
Soul came all the way from the Cayman Islands. He is about 2 years old and is a lab mix. He was picked up by the Department of Agriculture there and was placed in a program to be euthanized in one week if he wasn’t claimed or rescued. Thankfully, he was taken in, and brought here a few months later. I was fostering him at first, but fell in love with him. Soul came with his name and I had to keep it!
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?
I’m told I carry a bohemian energy but I just dress how I feel: yogi with an edge.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE LOOK AND FEEL OF YOUR HOME?
My home is very zen but colorful. I have lots of Indian floor pillows, Nepali prayer flags from travels, Buddha heads, sage, crystals, and anything that helps me create this essence of relaxation and comfort.
WHAT DOES YOUR IDEAL WEEKEND LOOK LIKE?
My ideal weekend is a mix of relaxing with my animals and my partner as well as getting outside in the sunshine, and being open to whatever else comes.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
Life and people inspire me; I find humans to be fascinating and wonderful. We each have so much to offer each other and this planet, and I love finding ways to empower people to spread wellness and goodness to this place. It fuels the creative!
FINALLY, CAN YOU LEAVE US WITH A FUNNY STORY ABOUT YOUR PUP?
Soul is such an outgoing sweetheart that he often startles people. Whether it’s a human, a big dog, a small dog, a cat or whatever, he wants to say ‘Hi,’ and everyday he manages to catch someone off guard. He’ll suddenly nudge his head into people’s hands and legs unexpectedly, and it always scares them at first. But, then they see it was a cute dog and they laugh, and so do I, every time.
