Allan Glanfield Loyal Canine Co and Frankie the french bulldog

We’re going to be blunt; a lot of pet products out there are ugly. Where’s the shelf appeal? The brands that belong on our vanity? Meet Allan Glanfield, designer, entrepreneur, and man after our own hearts. Founding Loyal Canine Company to bring a proper men’s grooming aesthetic to the market, these pet care products don’t just look great, they are made from high quality, human grade ingredients. The icing on the cake being the brand’s mascot and frequent model, Frankie, who is possibly the most handsome Frenchie we’ve ever seen. Read on as we get to know Allan and Frankie.

Please tell us about yourself, your profession, and what a typical work day is like.

I am a photographer / designer and the founder of Loyal Canine Company – the original dog apothecary. The project started from an interest in eCommerce. I knew building a following before launching a product was important, so I started an Instagram account around Frankie, to create awareness around us as dog owners. I really focused on issues that Frankie had, like dry nose that many bulldogs have too. A lot of what was on the market at the time that I tried, I didn’t like the product or the branding. I wanted to find leather goods and care products that reminded me of proper menswear and grooming. I’m actually a trained menswear designer as well.

From nose balm, we created paw products, and did about a year of research, trying to find ingredients to make us different that were unique and beneficial for dogs, like sea buckthorn. From there, we developed new products based on what our customers ask for. Frankie doesn’t have the issue of dry skin, but a lot of dogs do. Our goal is to use human grade, high quality ingredients, and to make our products safe. Not every natural ingredient is safe for dogs, so there are many things for consumers to watch out for.

Please tell us a bit about your dog. How did he come into your life?

I had always wanted a Frenchie since I lived in NYC – they are very common there. When I moved to Toronto, I knew I wanted one. I kept seeing a co-homing opportunity online so I finally researched what it was. Frankie is a breeding dog, and his breeder wanted all her dogs to have families to live with. He has a great life! I work from home and feed him raw, just like she does with her dogs. I saw a photo of Frankie at 8 weeks old and got him at 16 weeks. He is actually from Prague and we took him home from the airport. He even has a European passport! Three to four times a year, he breeds; his first litter was 2 and then 7 in the second. We’ve taken him to visit the puppies and he’s a proud dad.

How would you describe your personal style?

Simple and efficient. I have about 30 of the same t-shirt. My philosophy on design comes from the inspiration to find and solve problems, whether design problems or aesthetic problems.

How would you describe the look and feel of your home?

It’s a mix of old and new. You can probably see a contrast between my office and the rest of the house. My girlfriend Emily is into more modern, clean, and white design. I made the table and bench in our dining room. I like blending modern with cool old things.

What does your ideal weekend look like?

I spend a lot of time at Home Depot. But to relax, I like hanging in the backyard with Frankie or riding my motorcycle. I have a need to be productive so I’m usually working on a new passion project.

What inspires you?

I’m always looking to solve problems and come up with an idea. When someone says ‘man, I wish this was easier’, I immediately start thinking. Knowing I’m in control of my day and being my own business is also inspiring to me.
