The Senior Director of Rock It Promotions & Her New Frenchie, Blondie The Bull Pig
By The Get Leashed Doggy Style Team
In this household, blondes don’t just have fun; they kick serious tail. When friend to Get Leashed, Kate Makinson, welcomed a new Frenchie into her life, we naturally had to meet her! Blondie the bull pig, who gets her name from Debbie Harry’s famed band, looks as good in lavender as she does in skull pattern. Get to know this dynamic duo and take a peek into their stylish digs below.
Please tell us about yourself, your profession, and what a typical work day is like.
I’m a born and bred Toronto girl. I grew up on the Toronto Island and just have a major love on for this city. Isn’t it the best?
I’m one of three sisters. I have THE best friends in the whole wide world and feel extremely lucky to know and love every single one of them. They are family.
I have 13 tattoos. One more planned, then I’m done. I am mildly (very) obsessed with Stevie Nicks and Bruce Springsteen. I interrupt a lot (I don’t meant to be rude. I can’t help myself).
I have OCD tendencies which means my house is always clean and my closet/toiletries/bookshelves are always color-coordinated. I wouldn’t have it any other way. I live with the prettiest little dog in all of the land.
I’m the Senior Director at rock-it promotions – a PR agency in Toronto. I directly manage a team of Account Managers, their teams and their clients. In addition to being looped in on everyone’s accounts (as many as 30 at a time), I help out with new business development, overall account strategy and general support of the team, and direction of the agency.
A typical day has me in the office anywhere between 9 and 10 am. Depending on the day, I have a series of internal meetings – one on one check-ins with my team, full team weekly status meetings (where we debrief on what’s on for the week and what’s on everyone’s plate), or senior management meetings. Regular client status calls and new business meetings are also frequently a part of my typical day.
I help the team with everything from onboarding new clients, to planning sessions, topline strategy and overall account management. We work on everything from fashion to food to film so whether it’s a press preview, the opening of a restaurant, a client activation or a gala TIFF event, there are a lot of super interesting and fun events that we plan and/or attend as part of our job. It’s BUSY, but it’s wonderful.
Please tell us a bit about Blondie. How did she come into your life? Is there a story behind the name or particular breed?
I moved into a new home this past January. While living alone is lovely (who doesn’t love a house that looks exactly how you left it upon your return?! There’s that OCD again), I had the room and the love to give to a dog. I thought about it and researched options and read a lot and I settled on a French Bulldog. They’re great dogs – they love people, other dogs, are smart, social and obviously, adorable. Blondie is named after the band, because mama’s a bit of a rocker. But honestly, the name is so perfect for her. She came into my house, and we were immediately two. I don’t go anywhere without her. #TeamBlonde
How would you describe your personal style?
I feel like I’ve gotten more and more casual … heels are less frequent, ripped jeans preferred. Anything with a little edge but still pretty classic. An amazing pair of jeans, a tee, black leather moto, a statement bag, shades. Done.
How would you describe the look and feel of your home?
It’s a modern home and the palette is neutral (lots of sanded wood and white marble) so I’ve added some eclectic color and furnishings (like the striped, velour Paul Smith chair in the living room). I also have the amazing art of dear friends hanging in my home, which I love. The piece from Alexander Jowett’s Horizon Lines series in my living room is my fave. There are elements of rock and roll throughout which feel like me. My guest bathroom is decorated with Stevie Nicks and Rolling Stones portraits and there’s a giant Bruce Springsteen photograph (1 of only 100 printed) that hangs next to my bed from Toronto’s Analogue Gallery. It was my housewarming present to myself ☺
What does your ideal weekend look like?
It looks a lot different now that Blondie has arrived. It’s summer and it’s hot so we often head to the island and spend the weekend over there. She loves the beach and can run, run, run in my mom’s backyard. It’s basically kid and dog heaven so I’m super grateful I get to bring her there. Our third day together, I introduced her to it and she LOVES it.
Finally, can you leave us with a funny story about Blondie?
Blondie is such a sweet little pup. As a Frenchie she is full of gas (literally) and grunts. Watching her navigate everything for the first time is pretty amusing. She does not like RAIN! Barks at it incessantly. My snapchat is pretty much full of Blondie being a goof.
