Get Leashed’s Favorite Dog Mama Comedians Are Running the Game
By Jackie Cooper
This past year, Get Leashed has been in complete awe of the female comedians who, despite being complete jokesters, are seriously running the show. Not only have we seen women writing and performing killer sets, (most notably Amy Schumer headlining Madison Square Gardens), but they are also finally gaining recognition for being the heart of the writing room. Channels like Netflix and Comedy Central are increasingly devoting entire series and specials to these incredibly hilarious powerhouses.
One trend that we have noticed here at Get Leashed, is that rather than sourcing their material from rehearsed tales about life in a new relationship, dating, or their sex lives, many female comics are pulling from the love, joy, and hilarity of living with their pets. When these comics share – or more like over share – what their life is like with their pooch, it reveals what dogs and humans can bring out in each other. We feel pretty confident in saying that behind every funny woman, there is likely a funny dog. Take a look at these four ladies who are killing the comedy game, while being fierce dog moms, and we think you’ll agree!
An early adopter of bring-your-dog-to-work day (aka every day), you may be familiar with Chelsea Handler for shamelessly posting 90% of her insta feed with her two adorable rescues, Chunk and Tammy. With her growing Netflix library (Uganda Be Kidding Me Live, Chelsea, and Chelsea Does…), Miss Handler is becoming a household name alongside her dogs who go almost everywhere with her. This includes their most recent appearance on one of James Corden’s infamous carpool rides to promote her new show Chelsea: A Netflix Talk Show. Besides showering her own pooches with love and attention, Chelsea Handler loves using her own celebrity to help dogs in need and is also a partner in dog food company Dog for Dog.

“Tonight I didn’t realize another pedestrian was nearby when I said the following sentence to my dog: ‘I love going on adventures with you’”
If you’ve ever wanted to be able to text your dog, you’ve got to check out Chelsea Peretti. With a background of writing for a number of incredible shows like Parks and Recreation, Kroll Show, SNL, and the Sarah Silverman Program, Chelsea Peretti has now launched herself out of the writing room and in front of the camera as one of the most meddlesome and amusing office administrators we’ve ever seen on the show Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Netflix, again leading the charge, launched her further into the limelight with her stand-up special, Chelsea Peretti: One of the Greats. The special, reflects her doggy saturated Instagram account in many ways, as several of her jokes about her dog receive the biggest laughs and the episode includes several audience cutaways that reveal her crowd to be mostly populated with dogs. Chelsea and her dog are always taking a myriad of incredibly hilarious photos that are paired with spot-on captions, and for that we give them two paws up.

Kulap Vilaysack is the creator of Bajillion Dollars Properties and co-host of pop culture podcast Who Charted?, and has made appearances on Bob’s Burgers and Parks and Recreation. On top of all this, she also manages to keep her Instagram up to date with a hilarious feed of on-set shenanigans, promos and snaps of her Boston Terrier Rocky. Rocky even has his own hashtag, #31DaysOfRocktober, which sometimes emerges when Kulap finds any free time on her hands. Defining #costumegoals, we would put Kulap as one of the best dog moms and female comedians at the top of our list.

Rounding out the pack we have the queen herself, Bridget Everett, who is a goddess of comedy and alt-cabaret. Seen flying in private jets with the likes of BFF Amy Schumer, Aziz Ansari, or singing late nights with Patti LuPone, Bridget is a force to be reckoned with. In addition to being able to bring down the house, she is also quite vocal about persistently advocating pet adoption, after finding her soul sister, Poppy, on Petfinder. This Pomeranian diva not only stole Bridget’s heart, but her Instagram account as well. Within the past year, Bridget (with Poppy by her side) has landed countless roles such as Dagmar on Netflix’s Lady Dynamite, appearances on Inside Amy Schumer, Girls and in Trainwreck, not to mention her own hour special on Comedy Central called Bridget Everett: Gynecological Wonder, to name a few. If you’re into a formidable, raucous and saucy sounds, all tied together with some intimate stage banter, be sure to look for upcoming tour dates on Bridget Everett and Poppy’s Instagram. We can’t wait to see what these boss bitches tackle next.
