The Model & Events Pro With Her Pomsky & Chihuahua
By The Get Leashed Doggy Style Team
Scouring Instagram for cute dogs and awesome owners is both a hobby and a sport at Get Leashed. When we discovered the gorgeous Roxie and her stunning, unique breed Callie, a purebred Pomsky, we never would have guessed she has not one, but four amazing pups! Balancing a busy schedule as an entrepreneur and model, working from home allows Roxie to spend a lot of time with her squad. Plus, in true Get Leashed fashion, she’s found a dog-friendly patio that’s become her go-to hangout. While being a multi-pup dog mama is a lot of work, Roxie lit up as she spoke to us about each one’s personality and their story. Read on as we get to know more about this business woman and animal lover.
Please tell us about yourself, your profession, and what a typical work day is like.
I own a staffing company with my mom called Broxies, which has been around now for three years. We do event staffing, marketing, and PR for European companies in the food and beverage space who are coming to the US and Canada. I used to model professionally for Ford Models and now I still get to do some modeling through Broxies.
On a typical day, I wake up, head to the dog park, do some yoga, start my day working from home, then will visit clients with my Pomsky Callie. After that, I will come home, visit the dog park again, head to the gym, then relax! The dogs all have their own spots in my living room to chill, so they are happy to hang out and give me some peace.
Please tell us a bit about your dogs. How did they come into your life? Is there a story behind their names or particular breeds?
I have four dogs. My oldest is Princess. She’s like the mom of the pack. I got Princess in South Africa when I was staying there with my mom and aunt. My uncle’s dog named Barbie was sadly bitten by a snake and I was planning on naming my dog after her, but I couldn’t bring myself to call her Barbie. Princess was more fitting.
Mango was a gift from a boyfriend, over eight years ago. I originally had wanted a male dog, but when I met her she came right up to me. I didn’t have a name in mind, but I had been drinking a mango bubble tea and somehow Mango stuck! I told my parents I was babysitting a dog for a friend, but they knew she was mine.
I decided I was ready for another dog and wanted a girl, but ended up with another boy! Bentley is a Yorkie-Maltese and is such a loving dog.
Callie is a Pomsky who I found from Canadian Pomsky in Calgary. She is such a little girl! She loves to play and meet new dogs. I was stuck on the Pomsky breed. Many people told me to name her Whiskey because she has a smoky, brown coloring underneath (similar to my signature favorite drink!), but I couldn’t name my baby after an alcohol. I decided on Callie and it suits her nicely. There is a lot of variation in Pomskies, and I love her wolfish look and blue eyes.
How would you describe your personal style?
Colorful – I hate black. I love to wear patterns and stripes. I have a tan so I like colors that pop. A fun, classy, summery look is my favorite. I try to get away all winter! I find my style changes, but I don’t find inspiration in trends. After modeling, I got a tattoo and dyed my hair to change my look. Now, I prefer a more classic look for business.
What does your ideal weekend look like?
I try to get away a lot to visit friends. Many of my friends are models in Vancouver, New York, or LA, so we don’t see each other as often as we’d like. Fridays are my nights to myself, and I’ll get a nice red wine and relax with my pups. On Saturdays, I’ll head to the dog park in the morning or out to Muskoka. Saturday nights may have me out with friends, and on Sundays, brunch! It’s a great thing to look forward to with friends or my mom.
What inspires you?
I love adventure and I’m very spontaneous. My 2016 goal was to always say yes! If someone asks me on a trip, I’ll say yes and figure it out after.
I’m inspired to be successful in business to have something to hand down one day. I really do enjoy working with my mom, even when we butt heads.
My biggest inspiration is my grandpa. I still always call him when we get a new client and I love to make my family proud. Most of my family is in South Africa so it’s important to keep a close connection.
When people doubt me, I want to prove them wrong. That’s also a big driver for me.
Finally, can you leave us with a funny story about your dogs?
Callie has always loved toddlers. Once when we were walking and she saw a small child, she started bouncing like a kangaroo until she could say hi!
I take Callie with my everywhere. I’ve found one patio where she is welcome and we are always there! I get many questions about what kind of breed she is, so much so that someone suggested I print a sign.
I got lucky with Mango because she barks very rarely for a Chihuahua. She does, however, have a thing for jumping onto people’s plates!
Bentley is a rascal and Princess is the vet of the group. The dogs know their place around her! I love my dogs and they add so much to my life.
