Whether it’s her name or her piercing blue eyes, Chloe Rose is highly recognizable for her work on famed Canadian TV show, Degrassi: The Next Generation. Known for her role as Katie, the troubled soccer star, fans will get to see Chloe in a new role at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival in the widely anticipated Unless – Alan Gilsenan’s adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize winning novel. Although she has taken on dark, multifaceted characters, when we meet Chloe in her Toronto apartment she’s remarkably bright, down to earth, and eager to tell us how a little black cat came into her life.

Please tell us about yourself, your profession, and what a typical work day is like.

I’m the manager of a fine jewelry boutique as well as an actor. I’ve worked mainly in film and television, but I’ve taken this job at the boutique to fill my off time. A typical day would either consist of grabbing a smoothie at my neighborhood coffee shop then heading to the store for the day, or running to an audition before sitting down to get some writing done in the afternoon.

Please tell us a bit about your kitty. How did she come into your life? Is there a story behind the name?

I adopted Pekoe about a year ago from the Humane Society. I had been pretty set on welcoming a new furry companion into my life, and spent a couple of consecutive days at the shelter. It wasn’t until she and I locked eyes that I was sure I’d found the right pet. She came home with me shortly thereafter and the rest is history. She’s been such a lovely addition to our home. As for her name, I spent a lot of time thinking about the perfect one. I settled on Pekoe at a nearby coffee shop where they had listed Orange Pekoe tea as just “O. Pekoe” and it clicked. We call her “Peeks” for short, which works out really well seeing that she likes to peek around corners quite often.

How would you describe your personal style?

This is a tough question. I’d say I’m a minimalist, with a dash of bohemian. A bit of a tomboy but also very into form fitting clothes that make me feel sexy.

How would you describe the look and feel of your home?

Our space is an eclectic mix of vintage pieces and modern minimalist details. It’s very homey but definitely draws inspiration from a wide-ranging array of sources.

What does your ideal weekend look like?

Ideally, a great weekend would have a little getaway involved. Going out of the city for a weekend and enjoying some of the beautiful nature Ontario has to offer is one of my favorite things.

What inspires you?

Any and all forms of art. Bring on the jaw-dropping, gut-wrenching, tear-jerking art!

Finally, can you leave us with a funny story about Pekoe?

Pekoe makes me laugh almost every day. She likes to run up the stairs beside me, then plop herself on the ground right beneath my feet, belly up, so I can’t walk by without giving her a good belly rub.

Chloe stars in Unless at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival showing September 11, 12, and 16.
