Jill King Sandbox Advertising and her Parti Poodle Dexter

Jill King may own a Standard Poodle, but her life with Dexter is anything but standard! From poolside hangs to front seat convertible rides with the top down, Dex is one glamorous pooch. We dropped in on Jill at home and took a trip to her office, Sandbox Advertising, where Dexter delights the team and clients alike. Seeing Dexter and Jill together, you may not guess that she was once hesitant to get a dog.  Now, she jokes that more of the neighborhood knows Dexter’s name than hers! Read on as we get to know this stylish pair.

Please tell us about yourself, your profession, and what a typical work day is like.

I am a Toronto girl and love it here. I spend my days in the heart of downtown Toronto where I am the President of an amazing advertising agency – Sandbox. I spend my evenings and weekends, when I’m in town, in the very peaceful suburbs of Etobicoke with my husband, my teenage daughter and Dexter. A typical day for me is to receive a wake up call from Dexter, lots of coffee and a 45 minute drive into our beautiful and kind of funky office at Richmond and Church. We have a bring-your-dog-to-work policy, so besides Dexter, you may meet Blondie, Roxie or Jack on any given day; but never all at the same time. Our staff and clients love to see these guys. I am in and out of my office most of the time so Dex only accompanies me when I’ve got a full day in the office.

Please tell us a bit about your dog. How did they come into your life? Is there a story behind the name or particular breed?

I grew up allergic to dogs, so when my husband and daughter started talking about a dog a few years ago I was very hesitant. One evening a good friend of ours had people break into their home for car keys while the entire family was upstairs sleeping. The next day I said “yes” to a dog under a couple of conditions: The dog had to be large and needed to be a breed that I wasn’t allergic to. That’s when my husband discovered Dexter’s breed. He is a purebred standard poodle but his coloration (the spots) is described as Parti. Officially he’s a Parti Poodle and he lives up to the name each and every day.

How would you describe your personal style?

I think my personal style is fairly classic. I love tailored clothing. I’m a complete Smythe fanatic.

How would you describe the look and feel of your home?

Messy is probably not a look and feel right? My house is a bit eclectic.  Built in the 50’s it definitely has that suburban feel, but our furnishings are perhaps a bit more modern. I would also describe it as cozy and bright. Our kitchen, dining room and family room all open to our back yard that has a wonderful garden and a pool. I can say that because it was like that long before I moved in.

What does your ideal weekend look like?

My ideal weekend is getting up late, lots of coffee, maybe a Ray Donovan catch up and heading into my backyard for some reading and sun. Sunday evening I often have my extended family over and we have massive and very fun dinners.

What inspires you?

My family. I grew up in a very large and clannish family. I have over 50 cousins and dozens of Aunts and Uncles that we always spent time with.  My brother-in-law, sister-in-law, their children and Dexter’s nephew, Guinness, live directly across the street from us and we pretty much act like one big family. Our parents are friends and we are usually all together at holidays and birthdays. It makes me very happy.

Finally, can you leave us with a funny story about Dexter?

Dex is generally a very good guy but, left to his own devices, he sometimes makes bad decisions. The odd time that I catch him on the couch he looks at me and then muscle by muscle slides off the couch like he’s made of liquid.  It’s quite hilarious.
