The Sudbury Couple & The Insta-famous Petee The Husky
By The Get Leashed Doggy Style Team
The beauty of the Canadian North is undeniable, and it truly is a paradise for a breed like the husky, especially one prepping for sled dog glory. We first discovered Petee the Husky on Instagram and immediately had to learn more about the incredible photography and fun feel of the person behind the account.
Luckily for us, we caught up with the Sudbury-based trio of Chelsee, Shawn, and Petee who were in the 6ix to visit their friends at HOUND Collection. As it turns out, we have another friend in common: the gang at PetHaus. Basically, we were destined to be BFFs with this crew and we think you’ll see why below!
Please tell us about yourself, your profession, and what a typical work day is like:
Chelsee: We live in Sudbury and I’m a graphic designer and fashion photographer. I work with many agencies in Toronto and also do some model scouting. Shawn and I are both 23 and Petee just turned 1. I now spend a lot of time photographing Petee, too!
Please tell us a bit about Petee. How did he come into your life? Is there a story behind the name or particular breed?
Chelsee: My entire life, I had always dreamed of having a husky. I knew I wanted one and was ready, but Shawn wasn’t quite sure. I was leaning towards a black and white boy, and Shawn wanted a grey girl.
When we found Petee, he was the only grey one and had an eye patch – that’s where his name comes from.
Shawn: When I was little, my grandmother gave me a stuffed dog named after the dog in The Little Rascals. Because Chelsee’s name is spelled with the double “e,” we continued the trend with our Petee.
Petee has been in training since he was 5 weeks old; first for obedience, then for agility, and now he’s training to be a sled dog.
How would you describe your personal style?
Shawn: I’m a band tee kind of person. I do wear a newsboy cap that Chelsee likes to call my grandpa hat. PetHaus for Petee is such a fit for my style and Chelsee’s!
Chelsee: Ripped jeans is my thing. My style is a mix of artistic, hipster, and casual. I like to embrace the rocker side and grungy side too.
How would you describe the look and feel of your home?
Shawn: our home has a cottagey feel. It’s a 1950s era home and we have a lot of nautical inspired décor and tons of white and hardwood.
What does your ideal weekend look like?
Chelsee: We like to travel. Usually our weekends involve spending a lot of time with Petee, and training him to be the best he can be. We are working on bike joring which you can watch on his Instagram. We’re also teaching him how to swim. When I shop on the weekends, I bring him into every store I can to see if they are pet-friendly.
How did Petee’s Instagram following start?
Chelsee: we wanted to watch him grow. A friend of mine told me to make sure to take lots of pictures of him when he was young, because a husky would grow fast. I’m so glad we did!
I was doing a shoot when he was a really young puppy and brought him to the set with me. That day, the first photo I took of him for fun was just so beautiful that we started an Instagram account for him.
Shawn: His account just grew so fast! It’s an awesome, supportive community. If you’re ever having a bad day, there are so many wonderful, positive comments to read.
What inspires you?
Chelsee: Music inspires me, as well as taking photos and capturing people through photography.
Looking at Petee, it motivates me to hike and camp, do activities and really make time for those things. We are way more active now with him!
Finally, can you leave us with a funny story about Petee?
Petee has a girlfriend named River (@thenortherndogs) who is also a husky.
Probably the funniest story would be when we brought Petee to the Santa Claus parade. All the other dogs were walking around being happy and about ten minutes in, Petee decides he wants to be carried. Shawn had to carry him like a baby for two hours!
