Nicole Gretes and Pom Pom Chewy Get Leashed Doggy Style

We’re all guilty of it; fawning over a dog and introducing ourselves to their owner as an afterthought. When Pom Pom Chewy showed up to Get Leashed DOGA with his own workout outfit AND Pomeranian-sized yoga mat, it was seriously tough to stop oohing in a high pitched voice long enough to talk to his mom Nicole! The joy that Chewy brings to people’s lives is one of Nicole’s favorite parts about her fuzzy partner in crime, who is working on becoming a therapy dog to visit children’s hospitals (all the feels!). While it’s clear Chewy has his own style, we were extra curious to learn about Nicole’s. With her background in art gallery work, she’s elevated Chewy’s Instagram to celebrity status and resides in a spectacular Toronto condo.

So get to know this sweet and selfless pet owner in the profile below. And by the way, we’re putting out an open challenge: it’s finally time to ask the name of your neighbor with the cute dog, no matter how much uncomfortable time has passed!

Please tell us about yourself, your profession, and what a typical work day is like.

I own and operate a private school for 4-13 year olds. We run specialized arts, sports and tutoring programs. My day starts at a 5:30am wake up where I do my morning yoga and read the newspaper then head to work. My day is split into three groups of children, ranging from 7 year olds in the morning, 4 year olds during the day and older children in the late afternoon. I finish around 6:30pm and head home. I try to get another workout or walk in, hang out with my boyfriend, Jesse, and our dog, Chewy, and head to bed. I love to travel and read. Chewy is really easy to fly with so we try to get away as much as possible.

Please tell us a bit about Chewy. How did he come into your life? Is there a story behind the name or particular breed?

My dog’s name is Pom Pom Chewy, or Chewy for short. He is a one and a half year old Pomeranian. I decided to get a dog because I’d always had dogs growing up and was now in a place in my life where I could take care of one on my own. I adopted a small breed because I live in a condo and didn’t like the idea of a bigger dog stuck in a small space. I fell in love with Chewy after seeing his photo for the first time. His hair was sticking every which way and the photo was grainy, but even through all that it looked like he was smiling.

I started the @pompomchewy Instagram account because my friends were tired of me posting so many photos of Chewy on my personal account. He was so small and fluffy when I first got him that his photos were so cute; he looked like a little Pom Pom. People really responded to that, especially when he used to waddle around on his short little legs. At six months old I started taking him to work with me and he responded really well to the children, so I decided to incorporate him into my volunteer work. He’s currently working on becoming a therapy dog so I can take him to places like children’s hospitals. The amount of happiness he brings not only to children and people that see him on the street but on his social media accounts as well is all I can ask for.

Pom Pom Chewy works in films and commercials as well; we fly out to New York a few times a year for him to do different projects. He’s so easygoing that we try to do as much as possible, always while having fun!

How would you describe your personal style?

When I’m at work it’s all about athletic wear. I’m running around and doing programs with the kids so I need to be flexible. In the summer I love long summer dresses and in the fall and winter, jeans and a cool sweater. Classic with a bit of edge.

How would you describe the look and feel of your home?

Clean lines and classic furniture with a bit of edge, like my personal style. I used to work in art galleries in Yorkville and on Queen West so most of the art I have on my walls are by some of my favorite artists that I’ve worked with.

What does your ideal weekend look like?

Because I work such long days during the week, the weekend is all about relaxing and reconnecting. My boyfriend and I will try a new restaurant or bar or go see a show. We take Chewy on long walks around the city and meet up with other dogs for projects or play.

What inspires you?

Chewy inspires me because he’s always in such a good mood and is so amazing with children. My students inspire me as well. Their curiosity and adventurous sides keep me motivated. Books are my third biggest inspiration. My favorite book is The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran. He takes life’s lessons and makes them so simple and clear.

Finally, can you leave us with a funny story about Chewy?

When we were in New York doing some press for The Secret Life of Pets, Kevin Hart and Louis CK were doing an interview for The Today Show. They weren’t really interested in the dogs on set because they had done a lot of interviews that day and seemed tired. But Chewy was just acting so adorable that everyone on set gravitated towards him and started getting happy. You can’t help but fall in love!

Stay up to date with all thing Chewy!
