The Man Behind The Famous Miniature Schnauzer Remix The Dog
By The Get Leashed Doggy Style Team
Dogs add to our lives in so many ways, whether through companionship, giving us more excuses to get outside, and for many, becoming our photography muse. For Chris Ha, after adopting a Miniature Schnauzer he named Remix, his photos were suddenly being seen by a growing audience of fans. Remix’s press section rivals that of any top fashion model, having been featured in Harper’s Bazaar, Refinery29, and more. While this Toronto pair now resides in the dog-friendly city of Miami, we spent an afternoon catching up with them in the Distillery District. Having the stylish duo back in town, our shoot drew quite the crowd! Read on as we get to know this famous Schnauzer and his creative dad Chris.
Please tell us about yourself, your profession, and what a typical work day is like.
I am a brand marketer for an alcohol company and have now moved from Toronto to Miami full-time. It’s a great, dog-friendly city filled with like-minded people. I have always done a lot of photography as a hobby and ran a Toronto lifestyle blog a few years back. Starting the blog, I really wanted to go to concerts, so I picked up a camera. I got to shoot for Live Nation events and photographed tons of great artists from Rihanna to Journey, and even EDM DJs.
Please tell us a bit about Remix. How did he come into your life? Is there a story behind the name or particular breed?
Remix is almost three years old now. When I was ready for a dog, I wanted to call him Dino and even had a dog tag with that name made. Being a music lover, I had a dream about getting a dog and calling it Remix. Naturally I had to go with Remix! Now that we are in Miami, we see a lot more Miniature Schnauzers than in Toronto.
Remix has helped me become a better photographer. When I got him, I wanted to take photos of him without bombarding my friends so I started his Instagram account. Dogs of Instagram posted one of his photos and from there his account took off. Mr. Porter contacted us and included him in a campaign. He’s also been featured in Elle magazine.
How would you describe your personal style?
I would say city style, basically skinny jeans, simple, classic, not a lot of labels, and pretty casual.
And what about Remix?
The dog has his own regal, distinguished style! When he wears glasses and bow-ties, it comes to life so well.
What are some of your favorite pet-friendly places?
We love the Wynwood neighborhood in Miami – it’s kind of like Ossington in Toronto – very art forward and dog-friendly. A lot of restaurants in Miami are dog-friendly and we are greeted at many spots! I can even bring Remix into convenience stores with me. Miami also has a lot of doggy day cares which are open late.
What does your ideal weekend look like?
Exploring the city, heading to the beach, and going out and taking photos. It’s a creative escape. To mix photography and spending time with Remix is combining my two favorite things.
What inspires you?
I would say the biggest thing is travel. I’m not afraid to pick up and go – adventure drives me. I love looking for new experiences, meeting new people, and hanging out with Remix.
Finally, can you leave us with a funny story about Remix?
Remix has a song that we sing to him – it’s like his theme song – that’s made up. It’s like the background music to his life.
Being in Toronto, we got stopped and recognized all the time, and it’s cool to see that even though we’re new in Miami, he’s still getting noticed!
