Experience Summer Camp for Dogs In the Heart of Fall
By Si Si Penaloza
Imagine a weekend created especially for dogs and dog lovers, encouraging pet culture and conviviality in one of Canada’s most spectacular settings. The Westin Whistler’s Woof Weekend is just that; and best of all, the event benefits WAG, the local animal shelter. Give your dog the best getaway ever; you already have all the ingredients to get involved — love, cuddles and comedic relief!
Dog heaven kicks off in Whistler October 14-16, 2016, featuring an itinerary fully devoted to all things dog-friendly, set against a majestic mountain backdrop. This year’s lineup is more robust than ever with Woof Wardrobe Fashion Shows, Nosework Classes and Mountain FM’s Whistler’s Next Top Dog event. Learn how to bake homemade dog biscuits at a canine culinary class; recipe cards keep the DIY spirit alive once you get home. Pack your dog’s favorite vest, hat or handkerchief for Sunday’s Christmas in October Furry Family Photos. You can never have enough photos of Pepper come holiday time — what would social media be without our pets?
The Westin has always considered dogs as part of the family, welcoming them free of charge! The executive leadership at the Westin take dog happiness very seriously, taking pride in offering your pooch the same level of comfort as human guests with their signature Heavenly Dog Beds.
As guests arrive at The Westin Whistler, dogs and humans are treated with the utmost attention. Gourmet canine treats made by Westin chefs await in your room. Take in the sweeping views before hitting the meet and greet, where your dog will (hopefully) jump at the chance to socialize with all the furry faces and new smells of the weekend.
Saturday is a blockbuster of adventure and activities. While Pepper’s asleep, sneak in a workout at the hotel’s sublime fitness and pool facility. Next stop of course is the Westin’s sprawling continental breakfast spread, with high-octane coffee to get your mojo in motion for the long day ahead. At the beginner agility workshop, K9Incredibles caters to all breeds – from roly poly pugs to rail thin whippets. Their inclusive approach ensures every dog comes out of training with the spatial awareness of an agility rockstar.
Woof Weekend repeat guests love the adventure hike with the Alpine Dogs team. It’s a key highlight and it’s easy to see why; imagine a scenic jaunt through Whistler Village up to Lost Lake. It’s an utterly spellbinding two mile hike to the lake, with an option to shuttle back to Rebagliati Park for the group picnic lunch if your pooch gets too pooped. The beginner Nosework training with NoPawblems K9 Camp is another fan favorite; you’ll pick up practical tips on how canine scent abilities work. Woof Weekend workshops have inspired many attendees with new games to carry on with at home.
On Saturday evening, get all spruced up for the K9 Wine & Dine Gala in support of WAG. The dog to human ratio makes for the most entertaining gala! Such a swish and civilized affair with a three-course menu for humans, and dogs enjoying their own three courses to boot. Mingle with fellow passionate pet lovers, making new friends with your tablemates. You’ll also have the chance to meet the fur guests of honor – dogs rescued by WAG. The gala is a furry and festive night for a great cause.
Fall is an ideal time to visit Whistler-Blackcomb, with such lively mountain biking and ATV action along the trails. Not to mention leaf peeping, or shall we say gawking, at the breathtaking spectrum of autumnal colors. Get your camera ready — what Wheaten Terrier doesn’t look glorious popping out of a pile of crisp crimson leaves? Back in your room, kick back with a glass of wine and a tray of artisanal cheese. The Westin Whistler pulls out all the stops in making this weekend meaningful and memorable!
