The Swimwear Designer And Her Therapeutic Paws Volunteer Dog Fofa
By The Get Leashed Doggy Style Team
Do you believe in meant to be? Meeting Clara and her adorable Maltese, Fofa, you would never guess she was not her original owner, as tiny Fofa is never far from her mom’s side. Fitting into Clara’s life perfectly, even becoming a trilingual pup, the pair spread joy volunteering their time to visit those in need of a smile – something that’s hard not to do around both of these gals! With her flair for design and color, Clara’s swimwear line Nua (as well as making selections from Fofa’s growing wardrobe) provides a creative outlet for her to express her personality and passion. Read on to fall in love with their story like we did and discover why Clara refers to Fofa as mi angelita.
Please tell us about yourself, your profession, and what a typical work day is like.
Well for starters, my name is Clara. By day I work as a Media Analyst for the Space Channel and at night I run and operate a swimwear line called Nua. It’s where I channel my crazy! My day is always quite busy start to finish. I begin with dropping Fofa off at her grandparents and end the day with picking her up and heading home for all things Nua. Now depending on the day, Fofa and I volunteer through Therapeutic Paws of Canada and you will find us either at the Dorothy Lei Hospice or The Ronald McDonald House. In between all this, Fof and I also find time to be as social as possible. Being close to friends and family is a must for us. We love to love and be loved.
Please tell us a bit about your dog. How did they come into your life? Is there a story behind the name or particular breed?
I often refer to Fofa as mi angelita because she is exactly just that, my angel. She came into my life at a time of transition. I am very fortunate to have access to my friends and family as often as I desire, but I was still feeling very lonely and in need and of a side kick, if you will. This is where I found love on Kijiji. I searched daily on all social media platforms for a little white dog and could not find The ONE. Until I went on Kijiji and there she was, the dog formerly known as Bailey. A family was in search of a better home for this gentle soul as her current one was a little hectic. I renamed her Fofa for several reasons, but mostly because she just looks like a Fofa, which in Portuguese means, soft, sweet, cuddly, fluffy… It was perfect. This little fluff ball saved my life in many aspects. I in turn now love her to pieces daily to make sure she knows how important a role she has played in my life. Side note, Fridays at my work place have now been re-named, Fofa Fridays. Fofinha comes into work every Friday and cheers the entire department up with her cuddles. One last thing, Fofa is Multilingual as well. She understands English, Portuguese and Spanish commands. Smart little bugger.
How would you describe your personal style?
I would describe my style as, eclectic and unique. I don’t follow trends; I like to start them ;). All this said my style for the day is very dependent on my mood. I wake up and if I feel sassy and or naughty, I wear my pencil skirt and glasses. If I feel bad ass, I wear my leather jacket, torn jeans and black strappy heels. If I am feeling my Bohemian side, I wear my gypsy pants and bare feet. All of these are very different, but all of these are very me. To add to this, although fashion is very much a part of my life I think it’s imperative a woman feel sexy from the inside out! Confidence is the sexiest of creatures and the most fashionable of things. Feeling your very best will allow you to act your very best. We are here to conquer and that is exactly what we will do, wearing our very sexiest of outfits, our skin.
How would you describe the look and feel of your home?
I think my home style is a reflection of my own personal style. There is a definite mix of old and new. When you walk in you’ll see a juxtaposition of clean lines with raw materials, which is pretty much me in a nutshell. I like my home to be artistic in vision and welcoming in feel. In my space you can watch the best of movies, take the coziest of naps, and host the most romantic of dinners. My home is my haven.
What does your ideal weekend look like?
My Ideal weekend is a simple one. It Includes gym, San Remo Bakery for their EVERYTHING, quality time with Fofa and friends, visits with the parents and at some point, salsa dancing with Fofa and making and eating of some delicious foods. Oh and throw in a documentary or foreign film.
What inspires you?
Love is what inspires me. I have been fortunate to have been in the deepest, craziest most intense love and also to be loved in the craziest, deepest most intense way. Yes romantically, but also by Fofa, my closest friends and family. And having had this, I can see that it is exactly what the world needs. Love inspires my day to day, it inspires my designs, it inspires my views, and it inspires my thoughts and desires. It inspires my life.
Finally, can you leave us with a funny story about Fofa?
The funniest of stories involves Fofa and my parents. Both my mom and dad are elderly and dog sit every day. I was on my way to pick her up one summer day when they were nowhere to be found. No calls were being answered, they weren’t home, and they never leave the house, I was in a panic. I drove around asking random people if they had seen a man in a wheel chair with a white dog and and an elderly woman with white hair. I was coming up short. I decided to go a bit further out of the neighborhood and there they were. The Three Amigos coming around the block from the grocery store. My father with Fofa on his lap in his electric wheelchair, singing to her, my mom carrying a few bags and Fofa sitting on grandpa’s lap, head slouched on his knee, going for a ride. The scariest of moments for me, turned into one of the cutest, funniest moments involving Fofa!
