The Product Manager & Blogger With Her Pomchi, Jersey
By The Get Leashed Doggy Style Team
Do you ever look at your dog and think, how is it even possible that they’re so cute? That’s exactly what we wondered when we first saw Jersey. Jamie Cullen has had Jersey, a Pomeranian Chihuahua mix, for six years, and the two live a very busy but glamorous life in Toronto. We stopped in at Jamie’s impeccable pad to chat work life, style, and how this tiny pup has enhanced her life so much. You will fall in love with this pair!
Please tell us about yourself, your profession, and what a typical work day is like:
I’m a marketing product manager for a medical device/software company and manage a portfolio of 4 different platforms. I like to think of myself as the CEO of four small businesses as anything related to my product portfolio ultimately hits my desk at some point – the good and the bad. A few years ago I decided to go back to school and I’m now in my final year of an MBA program. My days generally kick off around 5:45 am-6:00 am. Anything later than that and I feel like I’m running behind. Walking Jersey and coffee are my first priorities before 6:30 am; we are typically the first in line at our local Starbucks. I work from my home office 80% of the time and fly to our corporate office in Montreal monthly for a couple of days. I am usually online at my desk by 7:00 am cleaning up my inbox or working on schoolwork. As soon as 9:00 am hits then I’m typically jumping back and forth from conference calls and managing the plethora of day-to-day activities related to my portfolio. Physical activity is critical for my mindset so I like to squeeze in a gym workout between noon and 1 pm. My weeknights are typically spent at school, low key at home with little Jersey or catching up with girlfriends.
Please tell us a bit about your dog. How did they come into your life? Is there a story behind the name or particular breed?
Jersey came into my life 6 years ago when I was living in Bentonville Arkansas (yes you read that correctly – Arkansas). I had relocated to Arkansas for a brief period and was very eager to adopt a dog. I thoroughly researched many breeds to find my perfect match. I wanted a small dog that travels well, doesn’t shed, and doesn’t bark. I think I missed the mark on the “no barking” criteria because Jersey can be a touch yappy at times, but she makes up for it in many other ways! I fell in love with Jersey when I came across the photo below on the website of a Pomchi breeder in Missouri. I immediately knew this little furball was meant to be mine. There is no particular story behind her name; I thought it was a cute name and now it totally suits her grown personality.
How would you describe your personal style?
Since I was a young girl I’ve always loved fashion and playing dress up. As kids I remember putting on fashion shoots with my older brother where I would get dressed up and he would play the photographer. I assume the inclination came from our grandmother, who was always polished and completely put-together. I grew up in Montreal and so my style definitely has a European and extremely feminine flair. I’m weak for details – lace, ruffles, an intricate button, or an unexpected cutout – my addictions!
How would you describe the look and feel of your home?
I usually spend weekends at my boyfriend’s place and weekdays at my condo (which I refer to as “the office” because I’m basically home for the work week). I would label my style as cozy-contemporary. I love a neutral base palette punched up with splashes of bright color. It’s important for my space to feel tranquil, organized, warm, and very comfortable. Living on the waterfront is absolutely peaceful, yet still walking distance to the hustle and bustle of the city.
Do you have any favorite dog brands?
Jersey weighs in at 3.5 lbs so she needs extra small accessories. I absolutely adore Puppia harnesses as they secure her little frame and also have such cute designs. Jersey gets her pampering done at Spaw Boutique on King West in Toronto. I keep her fur trimmed quite short for the look and to avoid tangles, and Spaw Boutique does an amazing job with her grooming. I also purchase all her foufou dog brand winter sweaters at Spaw.
What does your ideal weekend look like?
Jersey and I spend the weekend at my boyfriend’s condo, which she loves given it is much more spacious than mine. Our Saturday morning starts (usually earlier than my boyfriend would prefer!) with a morning walk down to the waterfront with Jersey to pick up coffee. One of our traditions is to discover a new pizzeria every weekend in search for the best Margherita pizza in the city – our one weekly cheat meal. Other than that, our weekends are usually spent with friends, family or just out and about around town. Jersey’s best friend Bisou (a cute little female Chihuahua) lives down the hall, so Sunday afternoon play dates (coupled with mama wine dates) are a stable in our calendar.
What inspires you?
I am inspired by strong successful women in leadership positions that also manage to achieve a balance between their professional life, family, friends, health, and other personal priorities. I am also incredibly inspired by women supporting women – sharing and celebrating each other’s successes.
Finally, can you leave us with a funny story about your dog?
When Jersey was about 6 months old (weighing less than 1.5 lbs) I decided to sign her up for dog training in our local community of Bentonville Arkansas. Little did I know that most dogs enrolled in canine training in small town America are serious breeding or show dogs. Here I was with little Jersey, who could barely walk a few steps on a leash, amongst a group of much larger pedigree dogs. Needless to say, we dropped out of school after a few short weeks. I somewhat regret this decision as Jersey does have the personality of a “show dog”. She absolutely loves people and the attention she gets because of her unique look; she even responds to the word “cute” with little jumping twirls as she hears it so often. It’s actually difficult to go for a walk without people stopping to ask about her breed – and she loves it!
