Koryn Greenspan

The Urban Dog Walks Founder With Her Rescue, Georgia

By The Get Leashed Doggy Style Team

How do you get out of the rat race and spend more time with your dog? For Koryn, starting her own business was one of the best decisions she could have made, after adopting her adorable dog, Georgia. Urban Dog Walks is an upscale pet service business in Toronto which Koryn founded when she realized professional PR was just no longer rewarding for her. Read on as we learn how she decided this big decision was right plus her tips for adopting an animal.

Please tell us about yourself, your profession, and what a typical work day is like:

Let’s see … I am a nature enthusiast, an absolute dog and animal lover as well as a passionate entrepreneur/business woman. 5 years ago I opened Urban Dog Walks, a Toronto based upscale dog walking company that operates in Forest Hill, Humewood, Wychwood, Cedervale & surrounding areas. My days are busy, super fun, very physical and literally fly by. Mornings are all about and dedicated to coffee, client requests / changes as well as scheduling work arounds for the day. I usually wake up to about 10 -15 client messages. Then we roll right into operations… I happen to work with the best associates in the city and throughout the course of the day we manage 2 or 3 group walks (with pick ups and drop offs), a series of requested and scheduled outs, as well as a handful of puppy visits … and let’s not forget about weather. Rain or shine, sleet or snow we walk.

Once operations are complete and all of our bears are home, safe and happily exhausted from their Urban Dog Walks I usually do some PR, internet work or write an article as well as manage all of the UDW social media, plan the schedule for the next day as well as client requests that are filtering through throughout the day. In addition 2 or 3 times a week I’m on client consults or pre puppy preps.

Urban Dog Walks services offered include: Pre Puppy Prep, Puppy Visits & Training, Group Walks, Solo Walks, Boarding & All Day Walking services.

So Very Busy. On Any Given Day lol*

Please tell us a bit about Georgia. How did she come into your life? Is there a story behind the name or particular breed?

Georgia is … a sweet, loyal, protective, sassy, fun, loving and dedicated girl. I was in and out of shelters for a long time trying to find the right dog to give a forever home to. Growing up, my family was always into rescues so I knew that’s what I was looking for.

As the story goes, I found a picture of her on line and she was stunning, she seemed sweet and there was definitely something different about her. When I finally got to her, I’ll never forget it, all the other dogs ran right up to the fence to say hi, to get their hello ear rubs, to sniff out their potential new handlers… but not Georgia, Georgia was standing by herself, beside the fence dignified, poised and independent.

After we met, I learned more about her history, and came to realize just how difficult of a start my girl had in this life… It took 3 hours to get her on leash, and another hour of she and I just sitting beside each other in silence before she stood up, sat in front of me and let me take her home… It was in that moment, that I decided none of her past mattered and I promised to lead with love for the rest of her life.

Her original name was Ruby Tuesday and although a fab name, in my opinion, just didn’t suit… so on the day I brought her home, her full name became Georgia Peach (middle name) Greenspan.

My mum took a look at her papers and said “Koryn this dog is from Georgia … Did you know that??” I looked at her, then I looked at Georgia and said “had no idea … guess it was meant to be” and Georgia and I have been together ever since.

How did you decide to start your own pet service business?

Well, Urban Dog Walks is a second career. I started off in PR and, to be honest, had a hard time working in that industry. It was a struggle for me to find a professional home and at the same time it became increasingly more difficult to find a passion for the industry that I was trying to create a career in. Towards the end of that time is when Georgia came into my life.

And it was through my time with her, as well as being honest with myself about what truly inspired me and what I truly wanted to do that Urban Dog Walks came to fruition…I actually had a moment when I said out loud: I just want to be outside with my dog, be with other dogs and good people and make a career out of doing THAT. And that is literally what happened … the next day I walked into my managers office and resigned. The very next day I opened Urban Dog Walks and the rest is history* I am so very grateful to have found a way to create a life that I love to live doing what I love to do.

Do you have any tips for someone considering rescuing a dog?

Yes. Understand their history. Make sure your rescue is right for you and your lifestyle. Let your rescue pick you. Be patient, kind and understanding. I always say … give your rescue dog 1 year to adjust. The dog you just brought home is going to evolve and do a total 180 if you give it the time and love that it needs. Lastly, don’t be afraid to adopt… rescue dogs are just a loyal, loving, fun and dedicated as other dogs are.

How would you describe your personal style?

My overall aesthetic is polished, elegant and refined with a slight edge. With that being said, I do have a lot of different styles. Sporty / weather ready for work, glam for events, evening ready for nights out and super chill when heading to the outdoors for nature adventures, road trips, time at my farm or with my family. In addition, hair is always done, makeup (at least a little) is always on and mani’s/pedi’s are a must.

How would you describe the look and feel of your home?

I’d say my home has a kitsch and earthy vibe with a warm and welcoming atmosphere wrapped in a contemporary and restorative aesthetic.

What does your ideal weekend look like?

Ok. 3 different scenarios for my best weekend ever (in no particular order):

Weekend Road Trip/Music Festivals/Farmers Markets

Weekend at my Farm

Weekend in the city with brunch & dinners booked, hike with Georgia in and around Toronto, errands getting done, exploring different areas of the city, consults/PR/Scheduling for Urban Dog Walks, an afternoon or time with my fam OR take some time and have a total veg/self-care/restorative weekend; Chill. Mode. Officially. On.

What are some of your (and Georgia’s) favorite dog brands?

Georgia rocks her Lotus Leaf Snoopy Pooch collar, is walked on an Easy Walk Harness and LOVES her Zukes treats. She is definitely a MuttLuks Winter Paw kind of girl & will only eat Taste Of The Wild (Boar is her favorite flavor). We do also love Buddy Belts!

What inspires you?

I am inspired by the narrative that nature provides.

Believe you should always have as much on the inside as you do on the outside. Swear by living the life that you love. Choose kindness, laugh often and never forget the importance of gratitude. Love your family, love your friends and of course love your dog. I believe that struggles make us stronger, music should live in your soul, and in letting passion drive the career path you choose. These are a few of the things that inspire me every single day*

Finally, can you leave us with a funny story about Georgia?

All I can say is that maybe, one day, Georgia will learn that doors actually move, that she CAN swim and that she is able sit in a car when it is moving … and it is hilarious every single time.

She is a happily rogue, wild & free girl. I love her to the moon back & could not imagine my life without her.
