Do you get excited by every dog you see? I love seeing dogs in magazines, on TV, on the Internet and also having fun at a park or even walking down the street. Their energy is contagious and after seeing them your day seems to continue on a positive note.

Here’s another way to make your day – looking at the adorable dogs who participated in the 2017 National Dog Show. For the past 16 years, this has been a yearly tradition for NBC who airs the show after the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. This spectacle earns around 20 millions viewers each year. The competition is hosted by the Kennel Club of Philadelphia, which also raises money for a variety of canine-related causes.

How is the winner selected? Dogs don’t have it easy for this competition as they have to spend a full day preparing for different levels of competition. The first round is breed, where dogs are evaluated based on their breed standard, shape, bone structure, movement and temperament.

There are seven groups in the second round—sporting, hound, working, terrier, toy, non-sporting, and herding. A dog is chosen from each one of these groups and the top seven dogs compete in Best in Show, where the Grand Champion is chosen.

Are you a Star Wars fan? How about a “Chewbacca” fan? What if I told you the winner of the 2017 National Dog Show looks like this beloved Star Wars character? I want you to meet “Newton”, a Brussels Griffon who was crowned as the “Best in Show” at the National Dog Show. Isn’t he adorable?

Newton beat 2,000 other dogs for the Best in Show title, taking the Toy Group before winning the final ribbon. He beat six other group champions: a Portuguese Water Dog, a Whippet, an English Springer Spaniel, an American Staffordshire Terrier, a French Bulldog and an Old English Sheepdog.

Brussels Griffons are known for their bearded snouts and almost human-like expressions. They are energetic and learn tricks very easily. The Chewbacca look-alike has other 21 “Best in Show” awards but it is the first time a Brussels Griffon has won the National Dog Show. Newton, handled by Susan DePew and owned by Keith Jacobson went home with a trophy heavier than he is.

What a great way of celebrating Thanksgiving. I hope Newton’s celebration included yummy treats and lots and lots of love. Congrats to this Brussels Griffon for taking home the title!
