What captures your attention when you’re going through social media? If you’re like most people, you’ll scroll from photo to photo and end up following accounts you never intended to follow. This was what happened to me and how I began following dog accounts on Instagram. After scrolling through numerous dog photos, one afternoon I ended up on the Instagram account of Toast the Dog, who after conducting some preliminary research, I discovered was one of the world’s most popular dogs.

Sadly, Toast recently passed away. While the cause of her death is unknown, the legacy she left behind is priceless. Toast, a King Charles breed, was rescued from a puppy mill in 2011 by blogger and publicist Katie Sturino. The dogs discovered at this particular puppy mill were treated horribly and did not receive adequate care. At the time of her rescue, Toast’s teeth were rotting away and had to be removed following adoption. Because of this, she had a hard time keeping her tongue in her mouth, leading to the signature dangling look for which she is most remembered by her fans.

Toast captured the hearts of over 383,000 Instagram fans thanks to her unique look, talent as a model and literary personality. Yes, you read that correctly, there was a book published about her entitled, Toast Hampton, where you can peruse a great photo collection of Toast enjoying the summer.

Toast was also a model who was featured in Karen Walker’s eyewear collection for spring 2015. Isn’t she adorable? Quite the feat to start off in a puppy mill and evolve into a dog model extraordinaire.

Toast, along with her proud human mom, were fierce advocates of ending the cruel practice of puppy mills. Using her popularity and personality, she helped advocate for the adoption of rescue dogs. Toast even had a wedding and all the proceeds were donated to Friends of Finn, an organization which fights to combat the inhumane treatment of dogs in puppy mills.

“Toast was often a little devil. Grabbing rolls of toilet paper off and dragging them into the living room for a snack”, said Katie. She goes on the say that Toast enjoyed snoring too. Katie posted a eulogy on the @toastmeetsworld Instagram account and paid a tribute to her famous dog by asking fans to upload their favorite pictures of Toast.

Katie also set up a foundation in Toast’s name, “Toast Meets Heaven” where all proceeds go towards continuing Toast’s work in raising awareness about puppy mills and promoting the adoption of rescue dogs.

Katie wrote the following on her Instagram page: “Toast was not just a pet to me, she was an inspiration. I found myself through that journey and I have never felt more at peace with myself. I’m devastated but I am so grateful for this toothless angel”.

Rest In Peace, Toast.

We hope we can do you justice by continuing to promote your legacy through encouraging and educating prospective dog owners about the value of animal adoption.
