The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is coming up in less than a week in New York, and the participating dogs and handlers are preparing for an exciting show. Ticket sales for the big event started in October, but we hope there’s enough for any of you last minute ticket-buyers. The first events, marking the start of Westminster Week, are the 5th Annual Masters Agility Championship and the 9th American Kennel Club Meet The Breeds on Saturday, February 10th. Then on Monday, February 12th , the 142 Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show begins, with competition on until February 13th!

From 8 am to 4 pm, 330 dogs will compete in this 24-year-old competition. There are three types of agility classes: Standard Class, Jumpers with Weaves, and FAST (Fifteen and Send Time). All kinds of dogs are able to compete – including mixed breeds!

What is the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show?

Back in 1877, a group of men would frequent a bar named Westminster in Manhattan. There they would drink and lie about their shooting accomplishments. Soon, they formed a club and bought a training facility and a kennel for their dogs and hired a trainer. They couldn’t agree on a name for their club and settled on naming it after their favorite bar.

In order to continue their competition, they decided to stage a dog show so that they could compare their dogs. Now, 142 years later, the tradition continues with over 12 coveted trophies to win.
