Being a celebrity is not an easy task with the paparazzi following you everywhere. They document every outfit, every movement, speculating on emotions and relationships. This is definitely not the life for me, but there are many celebrities who get used to it and learn how to manage inside this lifestyle.

One such celebrity is 75-year old Barbra Streisand. How can I forget her role in Meet the Fockers? This is a movie that made me laugh so hard. The multi-Award winning actress and singer is currently in the eye of a controversy due to her decision to clone her dog, Samantha. Her beloved Coton du Tulear died in 2017.

“I was so devastated by the loss of my dear Samantha, after 14 years together, that I just wanted to keep her with me in some way,” said the music icon in an interview published by the New York Times.

The puppies were made from cells that were extracted from Samantha’s stomach and mouth prior to her death. Once the puppies were born, Ms. Streisand dressed them in red and lavender so that she could tell them apart.  This is how they got their names — Miss Scarlett and Miss Violet.

The actress said one of the reasons she chose cloning was because she couldn’t find another curly haired Coton. “It was easier to let Sammie go if I knew I could keep some part of her alive, something that came from her DNA,” she recalled.

A controversy has been raised by fans over the choice of cloning versus rescuing. However, while waiting for the test results to determine if the cloning had been successful, Streisand did adopt two dogs.

One was a rescued Maltipoo named Sadie, after the first dog Streisand was gifted from the cast of Funny Girl, when she turned 22. The second was a Coton de Tulear named Miss Fanny whom Streisand got from Samantha’s breeder. That latter had a mother named Funny Girl. Very interesting!

Ms. Streisand had a friend who cloned his dog and she was very impressed with the results. Samantha’s cloning process was very successful – resulting in four puppies. Unfortunately, the runt of the litter died before the puppies were old enough to be delivered to the Oscar and Grammy winning star. Five dogs were a lot to handle for Ms. Streisand and she gave two away. She ended up with three dogs: Miss Fanny, Miss Scarlet and Miss Violet.

“It’s a bit overwhelming. But we love them so much. Each puppy is unique and has her own personality. You can clone the look of a dog, but you can’t clone the soul. Still, every time I look at their faces, I think of my Samantha…and smile,” said Streisand, a proud animal lover.
