Versace on the floor will have fur no more…

If you follow fashion and street style, you’ve probably noticed a lot of fur, both real and faux on the runways and on the avenues. There’s just something so luxe about dressing in soft, fluffy fabrics, but is it necessary? 2018 is a year of change, with many luxury heavy weights like Michael Kors, Gucci, and Jimmy Choo pledging to cease creating with real animal fur.

The latest brand to commit to “no fur” is the always edgy, always sexy Versace.  The fashion house’s matriarch, Donatella, made a statement during a recent interview with 1843 Magazine:

“Fur? I am out of that. I don’t want to kill animals to make fashion. It doesn’t feel right.”

We’re sure the brand’s supporters, including animal-lover Lady Gaga (who even has a song called ”Donatella”) will support this statement.

We can’t help but wonder, could another member of the Versace family have influenced this decision? The adorable Audrey Versace, Donatella’s beloved dog, is a major part of the designer’s life.

Audrey lives the life of the adored with flights in private jets, dining with celebrities, and a Versace wardrobe, of course.

Other designers, including Tom Ford, are now grappling to reconcile their personal views with the business of fur. Ford, a staunch vegan, has often discussed the use of fur in his label’s designs.

Perhaps fashion is following in the steps of designers such as Stella McCartney, and experiencing a moral awakening.

Fashion provokes emotion and it sometimes makes us uncomfortable. It represents the pushing of cultural boundaries and the desire to break free of societal norms to experience something more beautiful. We hope more designers will continue to innovate, embracing cruelty-free and sustainable fabrics and textiles.

What are your thoughts on fur? Is vintage fur a moral high ground? Would you prefer a winter coat without animal fur trim if it was just as warm? Is synthetic fur terrible for the environment? These are the questions to be asking as fashion and society continue to evolve.

We applaud Donatella for stepping up and going in a new direction.
