Way back in 1999, Baba Tree founder, Gregory MacCarthy, traveled to Ghana to study drumming. He never imagined how deeply he would fall in love with the nation. But, fall in love he did, so much so that this is the place he decided to found a fair trade business. Initially, the idea was to sell a few local beads and clothes to fund his drumming, but it soon grew into a thriving business. Baba Tree now has its own compound and a team of passionate employees, and Gregory has become the “fairest trader” in Bolgatanga, Ghana.

The team at Baba Tree make hand woven baskets and other goods, and are paid fairly for their work. Artisans also receive commission for the pieces they sell. Taking a personal approach, the company’s ecommerce site actually shows the team member who made each product that is for sale, proudly displaying his or her work.

Not too long ago, Baba Tree was inundated with requests for the company to add dog beds to their product line.  We pet people can be very vocal and determined! Gregory and his team listened, and now produce several sizes and designs that are both beautiful and comfy for pets.
