A Study Shows You Walk 1,000 Miles A Year With Your Dog

Dog owners are racking up a lot of “accidental fitness” miles

Another win for pet owners!

The new year started some months ago and I can’t believe how fast 2018 is flying by. In a blink of an eye, I will making my New Year’s Resolutions for 2019. One of the most popular resolutions surrounds the goal of losing weight. This theme is renewed as spring starts and we begin to dread dusting off our bathing suits and heading to the beach.

The people who have the greatest success in losing weight have a friend or exercise partner motivating them to keep at it.  The best friend to have in this venture is a dog! Dogs love to go walking and play with you outside.

According to British pet food company, Harrington’s, the average dog owner walks more than 1,000 miles and plays over 2,000 games of fetch with their dog each year. Harrington’s conducted a survey a of 2,000 dog owners to determine just how active people are when they’re with their best friends.

The results are very interesting…

According to their study, the average dog owner walks their pet at least 10 times a week, with each trip lasting 34 minutes. If we do the math, the average length of these walks is under two miles.  Researchers say that by walking your dog, you easily meet other pet owners. This translates to over 1,000 conversations with other animal lovers each year. That’s a lot of potential friends or mates to meet!

Twenty-four per cent of those surveyed said walking the dog on a daily basis is a great opportunity to take children away from the electronic distractions they may have at home; while 64% use the walk as a time to bond with their dog. Dogs in the study spent half of their time off leash, but 1 out of 4 dog owners admitted they don’t let their dog off-leash at all. Some of the reasons for this include: lack of access to an off-leash area, behavioral problems with the dog, and 30% claim it is simply too dangerous.

This extra exercise is a major wellness perk.

“For dog owners, going out for a walk is one of the main perks of owning a pet. While a walk is necessary to keep your pet fit and healthy, it’s also a great opportunity to bond with your dog, away from the chores and your busy day-to-day lives,” says a spokesman for Harrington’s.

The study also found out that the majority (89%) of pet owners enjoy walking their dog, but 39% believed they didn’t do it often enough. Some of the reasons owners don’t walk their dogs as often as they would like include: poor weather (47%), feeling too tired (20%) or finding it difficult to find places where they can walk their dog off the leash (9%).

To ensure owners and their dogs are getting the most out of their walks, Harrington’s teamed up with nine dog experts to create a series of dogventures. It sounds like lots of fun! This wonderful idea will help British dog owners find places to walk their dogs in the UK. The website has great features, including exploratory trails. It would be amazing if this series of dogventures happened for regions all over the world.
