From Witchcraft to Walking on Two Legs – We Can’t Get Enough of Celebrity Dogs

Could a 17th century poodle be the first canine celebrity?

The phenomena of iconic pets, with celebrity stature, started hundreds of years ago with a humble and dedicated white Standard Poodle named, Boy. This dog, a gift to the imprisoned Prince Rupert from his uncle, King Charles I (of England), was so skilled in avoiding death on the battlefield that people started to believe he was a witch.

A most unusual dog haircut invigorated the rumors that preceded Boy’s arrival in England. With a shaved backend and an already legendary status, Boy was no ordinary canine. Word had passed from battlefields in Austria that no one could kill his human when Boy was with him. Several Austrian soldiers even claimed to have shot Prince Rupert at point-blank range with nary a scratch.

Fake news has always been a plague, and rudimentary social media of the 17th century did not escape its lure. A pamphlet called, Observations Upon Prince Rupert’s White Dog Called Boy was a bit of satire wildly circulated to poke fun at those who believed the dog had Occult powers.

The pamphlet was widely disseminated, claiming that Boy could speak multiple languages, catch a bullet in his teeth, keep his master bullet-proof AND invisible, and that Boy possessed the power of prophecy. All of this was propaganda, of course, but the pubic lapped it up.

It seems that dogs have enchanted us since recorded history. While modern canines are not subject to suspicions of witchcraft, they are very much in the spotlight and shaping cultural norms.

These are four of our most favorite canine celebrities:

TUNA

Tuna is a spirited Chiweenie that looks ever so much like Mr. Burns from The Simpsons. Pawrent, Courtney Dasher, couldn’t resist his endearing overbite and shrivelled neck when she rescued him from Farmer’s Market in LA (2010). Tuna is the ultimate “underdog” and wields the special power of inspiration.

Many fans have tweeted or commented that Tuna has given them the courage to look past their own perceived flaws and get out there to live their best life possible. Dash is thrilled that Tuna is able to help so many shake off their self-consciousness.

JIFF POM

This adorable Pomeranian boasts a stunning 8.4 million followers on Instagram, a Guinness World Record. Jiff Pom is the most followed animal on the planet and has his own website, merchandising, YouTube channel, book, and has even appeared in several feature films.

But, what really won our hearts is Jiff Pom’s special talent as the fastest dog on two legs, a title he won in 2014 from Guinness Book of World. This little Pom is so darn cute that there are conspiracy theories that he is not a real dog. Of course you are real, sweet little Jiff Pom.

DOUG THE PUG

Doug came from a breeder in Ohio before settling in Nashville to become a social media icon. Leslie Moiser is his human and she claims that Doug makes a lot of people happy on the Internet with his exuberant personality and hilarious mock Kim Kardashian and Justin Timberlake style photo shoots.

MARNIE THE DOG

It is impossible to resist the charms of this senior cutie. Marnie was once a very stinky Connecticut street dog that suffered from vestibular disease. This has left her with a head tilt and permanently lolling tongue.

The sixteen-year old media maven is the ultimate rags-to-riches tale. Shirley Braha rescued Marnie when she was at the advanced age of 11 years. Braha’s heart couldn’t stand the suffering of this feisty senior, so she scooped her up. Marnie was helped to heal, and the rest is Internet history. People were so inspired by the recovery of Marnie and her spry demeanor despite previous life struggles, that she was almost an overnight sensation. Marnie’s living the sweet-smelling life now. We’re happy for you, Marnie!
